Hey guys looking for a new snowblower.  Anyone have a recommendation as to which brand is a good one.  I'd love to have a Honda, but my wife would kill me if I spent $2500 on a snowblower.  Also looking at Ariens, but I don't want one with a cheap Chinese engine, only B&S.

I have an old (~1995 )John Deere that still runs well. A newer Ariens for my shop. Its heavier than the Deere but that thing will throw some snow. I think the Ariens is made in America

This will probably clear your driveway with little or no problem.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards Ariens.  Anyone  have any experience with the tracked models?

...thanks for the recommendations, but I don't have the time to pull the motor from my Vette and put it on my snowblower.  And I certainly don't have the time to get a new wife to scoop the driveway...haha.  If it's not warm enough to do yard work in a bikini top, she's not doing it...haha.

Just get a wheeled Ariens of a size that fits your needs. Mine is an 8 horse. The tracked models are more expensive and only really useful on heavily sloped driveways. Get an 8 -12 hp Ariens and you will never need to worry about it again.

I was looking recently and noticed engines on snowblowers aren't list by horsepower anymore.  They list the size in c.c.'s of them now, I have a 5 h.p. (195 c.c.'s according Mfg.) Craftsman that I always wished had more power for clearing the end of the driveway.  The recommendations for as much power as you can afford are on the right track.

If you can't spend the money on a Honda buy an Ariens. In fact some people might argue the Ariens is the better of the two, certainly more for the money. I am also shopping for a good snow blower, I want the Honda but am choking on the price. Prolly wind up with an Ariens myself. Anything is better than the wussy Troy-Bilt that I have now.

ETA: All the Ariens I have looked at so far have a B&S engine.

Make her shovel a few times, then you could spend what was necessary for it..

I paid less then $2500 for a quad with a plow. I would have some issue paying that much myself.

If I was in the market I'd buy an Ariens.  But my 30+ year old John Deere  826 is holding up fine to the lake effect snow winters I have here..  I did a couple modifications to it last year and it's like a new machine.  Throws snow real far now.

I have that same shovel. Best one I ever bought.

I got a Toro a few years back and it works great, starts everytime, shoots slush  all the way across the street. $1000.
My buddy bought an Ariens that seems to never start for him.

It's probably an Ariens, painted green and yellow.  I've been informed that they built snowblowers for John Deere branding.

But that new head light sucks as most of the light thrown is into my eyes, so I painted the lens over, then added 2 sealed beams switched between the two. The new engines put out 9 amps, so adding extra lights don't hurt the machine. Even with the hand warmers on, with both headlights on the lights glow brightly.

Airens with chains on the wheels if you have a steep driveway.

I've always been glad for chains, steep or not.  Mine's an old Snapper though.

Make sure you get a two-stage.

Single-stage snow blowers are good for clearing a sidewalk in Atlanta or Dallas once or twice a year, but not much else.

Chains are needed if you got lots of ice on a hilly walk way. Otherwise, I don't care for chains. If you have only an inch or so you can't travel in high range because the machine is hopping over the chains. The front of the blower does a pop pop pop on the driveway. I found new tires give you all the traction needed.

Screw chains, I had them on my blower for years and hated them.
Sno Hog tires FTW!

I vaguely remember having one of those in my garage when I was a kid.  It was like one of those machines you feed logs into, and get sawdust out of, except that the snowblower had the chopper exposed at the front.  We used to chase the neighbor's dog around with it.  We never caught it.  Would have been awesome I think.
