I have to admit I never really got it. Yea I can get some don't like others different from them.
But as I see it is is the Character of a person who determines my opinion of them or a group.

Maybe it was because being from NY where we have quite a cross section of ethnic groups, and then in the Navy
where it really was a mixing pot of not only US citizens but some who were from other countries and territories.

It still makes me shake my head at how some people don't like others due to Nationality or the color of their skin.

I have met great people from every ethnic group, and then others from those same groups that
were total assholes. But in the end it was the individual, not the entire group that was the problem.

And Yes some groups have more than there fair share of assholes
But like I tell my wife "Hey I'm not an asshole I'm German"

What am I missing?

It's not the color of their skin that causes people to discriminate against them; it's guilt by association. When a person has too many negative experiences with a group of people with shared traits or culture, they begin to view that entire group in a negative way. Right or wrong, that is the reality of human behavior. If you want people to stop discriminating against a certain culture/religion/race/whatever, get the people in that group to stop acting like assholes.

I kind of think that the meaning of the world has changed. The definition has to do with characteristics classifications and belief of superiority;

"the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races."

The word racism is used now more often when "prejudiced" might technically be more apt.
It kinds of seems like racism is a ideology, and prejudice is an action.

Yeah, it exists...probably always will.  A good deal of it is contrived, though.

I never gave it much thought and grew up using the same terms to describe the asshats as they did, amongst themselves.

There's a couple of places racism comes from.  That's one of them.  It's really just a matter of unconscious math: "If I notice more behavior that I find to be negative from people who belong to group X than the average, others from group X are more likely than average to be unpleasant/assholes/whatever."  This can come from personal experience directly interacting with people, or it can come from what is viewed in the media or anecdotes related by people you know.

The other place is that of upbringing.  If you grow up around people, particularly those you respect, who dislike group X and make it known through their words and actions, then chances are good that you'll grow up to dislike group X as well.

When I was younger, and angrier, I could find plenty of reasons to hate people without worrying about ethnicity. The older I get, I find that I can find common ground with just about anyone. Live long enough, you find out that most of us have more in common than not. Racists are either really ignorant or really stupid.

As someone from a German family he is right on the money!

The problem with "racism" is it's lost its meaning or at least the definitions have changed fairly recently.  I grew up in south FL, a mixing bowl if I have every seen one.  Had friends from all points of the globe.  Contrast that with some family and family friends that were "old school racist".  By that I mean believed black people should have stayed in the fields or at least the back of the bus.  To me these people are few and far between these days.  The problem is we have a younger generation that doesn't have the slightest damn clue what the earlier generations went through.  Sure they heard about it, but now EVERYTHING is racist.   Don't like a single black person?  Racist.  Didn't hire me, must be racism.  Make a comment about me being an ignorant dumbass?  Racist.

Somehow we have created a self fulfilling prophecy.

Now that I live in south Texas it is the Hispanics that are always screaming racism.  Mind you it is against the bosses/cops/politicians that are also...wait for it...Hispanic.

Like
every other form of collectivism, racism is a quest
for the unearned.  It is a quest for automatic
knowlege -- for an automatic evaluation of men's
characters that bypasses the responsibility of
exercising rational or moral judgment -- and, above
all, a quest for an automatic self-esteem
                   (or pseudo-self-esteem).

I truely don't believe I'm superior to anyone based on race. I am however, increasingly sick and tired of a lot of people I'm not superior to.

While I am not about to assert that there aren't "pure" racists out there that automatically hate others based upon their ethnicity, I really think that most of what we see as racism in a post civil rights movement world stems from cultural issues-- and because of that, it is has the potential to be manifested in a localized manner.

I teach middle school and high school English in a low-income, rural community.  The school is about 65% Black, 35% White, 0% anything else.
While we don't have all that many issues, I do know that we have some pure racists on each side that have the good sense to keep their mouths shut.

What irks me is when cultural issues collide, and the immediate response is "Racist!!!"

I'll give you a small, yet salient, example.

Recently one of my 9th grade students (white) asked me if I could do something about the black girl sitting behind her who constantly plays with the white girl's hair in class.  For some reason, I notice this a LOT in my classes.  The white girl felt uncomfortable saying anything for whatever reason.

When I asked the students later (as a class) to remember that we need to keep our hands to ourselves unless we have permission, the black girl immediately made the comment "What? All you white people don't want a black person to touch you?"

I just responded in my typical fashion "I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't want ANYONE up here touching me. I figure everyone has diseases that I don't want.  And the bottom line is that you don't have the right to give them to me, or anyone else.-- so get over it."

That stems from the standard practice that I have of using alcohol-based sanitizer every time I pick up papers, or anything else.  You learn that REAL fast working with 105 students a day.

It just irked me that the immediate response to such concerns was "racism."  I wonder how often that is, in fact, the case with a number of things.

I can meet any individual and have no preconceived prejudices.  Its when a group of people get together and act a certain way where groups start getting profiled.  I live near an indian reservation and the racism towards indians is quite severe.  This is mostly that the local indians get paid upwards of $100k a year from the casino soley for being indian.  The ethnicity that causes the most crime in town are indians, they are the reason for the rampant drug problem in town, they are the reason for the blight of their trailers and junky yards.  Most people send their kids to the private schools or public schools in neighboring towns as they don't want to mix with them.

I can meet any indian one on one and not have a problem.  But everyone will bash the indians for the problems that they cause.  Racism? Not unless it skews your view unfairly.  Facts are facts.  So long as you have the common sense to realize that everyone is an individual regardless of skin color, and treat them as such, racism shouldn't be a problem.

Although some people will hate based on race, most racism is perceived rather than actual. I have lived in MS all of my life, except for the four years I was in the Corps, and I have yet to meet an actual Klan Member. I however believe that a lot "racism" is more a societal issue. A lot of the country is segregated by choice and homogenous groups have different ways of doing things than others. That's different and different is perceived as bad.
IMHO and YMMV.

True racism is more rare than people most people would have you believe, at least among Americans.

A true racist wouldn't admit that there are exceptions to the idea that all members of one race are somehow wrong.

While a great deal of people around here have no problem dropping n bombs, etc, They'll admit that not all black people deserve the title. But they're just not willing to take the chance. When almost every violent crime they see is perpetuated by a black person or latino person, they start to mistrust people of those races. When you start getting multiple bodies found in your community and it's a series of retaliatory gang hits, it creates a certain image that those type of people are dangerous to be around.

Right or wrong, that's how it happens.

Racism is retarded.  Cultural prejudice is another matter.  I would never begrudge anyone simply for color of their skin.  Hell, I love to date black women almost exclusively, but only when they share a same set of values, background, education, etc.  But I will be prejudicial to those of a culture I do not like or identify with no matter their skin color.  That could be ghetto rats or trailer trash.  Take your pick.

It's not so much skin color or ancestry. It's culture, behavior, principles, politics. I can respect or dislike anyone based on these things.

Statistics, choices in elections, lifestyles, attitude mean something to me, because I believe that tells much about the person. If that means I'm likely to dislike 93% of one demographic, 71% of another and 40% of yet another, then I guess I'm guilty of whatever that makes me.

Honest, responsible, believe in conservative values and the principles this country was founded on? You have my respect, until you chose to do something as an individual to lose it.

Support the Liberals and their vision for the country, want to take my rights and freedoms, steal my money to support true racism and socialism? Want to be a thug, a leech, a thief, an unprincipled bum? Want to support and enable that culture? I may be sociable and polite to you, but in the end I dislike and have no respect for you. You are what is wrong with our society.
