There is no comparable American rock band. Not even close. And no, leave that Hagar crap out of it. I mean, was Van Hagar better than Eddie just sitting around drinking for 20 years? Yes. But not by much. I can't embed, but... So This is Love? (Live in Oakland '81) In a Simple Rhyme Stay Frosty As Is |

Here's a question for you.
Let's assume David Lee was prohibited from talking between songs. Let's be honest, he's a douchebag. Would you rather go to a show to see David Lee sing only David Lee fronted songs or go to a show to see Sammy sing only Sammy fronted songs? Meaning 1984 is the dividing line. Sammy can't sing any pre-5150 songs and David Lee can't sing any post-1984 songs. Answer is pretty obvious, huh? |

Secrets Hear About it Later (Live Oakland '81) Al is said to have the entire Oakland '81 concert footage. Obviously it was pro-shot. This is the Holy Grail of =V/-/= bootlegs |
| Saw them last year in Nashville. When Dave just sings, and doesn't add in his artistic interpretation of a song, and especially when he doesn't talk, Van Halen still rocks...big time. Eddie is better than ever. I do miss Michael Anthony on backup...very underrated as a vocalist. |

Quoted: It all went to shit with the synthesizers on 1984. ORLY? Girl Gone Bad House of Pain (and just for kicks the ORIGINAL House of Pain) (also I assume you weren't bothered by the synthesizers on Women and Children First or Fair Warning?) |

Drop dead legs
It never got much airtime, don't know why. Kick ass tune Someone said they miss Michael Anthony... I agree. I bumped into him at Barrett Jackson (classic car auction) here in Scottsdale, he's a really cool guy. |

and they were infinately better with Sammy Uh no, that was Van Hagar No, they were Van Halen. Yes, the DLR years were the "classic" lineup of VH, and so will always have that special spot in a lot of people's memories. But better? Nope. Sammy's vocals were better by far; wider range and edgier. DLR is OK, but I was never impressed with his singing even in the early years, and I don't think they've gotten better over time. Sammy's have. Also, in my opinion, they did a lot deeper songs with Hagar, too. Roth/VH did good songs, too although personally I thought the "Pretty Woman" and "You Really Got Me" covers were kinda "meh", and these seem to be some favorites. I think it's kind of strange that, whenever a comparison of the two eras comes up and the music becomes an issue, someone always brings up the "but DLR was a better frontman" argument as their basis on why the DLR lineup was better. And that's OK, too, he is entertaining to watch just for the martial arts moves, but overall he didn't seem to be that original to me; it seemed like he was trying to blend Freddie Mercury and Jim Morrison, and not doing it all that great. Another thing I see a lot with the SH/DLR comparison is.....-But with Sammy they used KEYBOARDS! -- So what? They used them on "1984", with Roth too. So did a lot of other bands, like Deep Purple and Rainbow and Ronnie James Dio, and none of them were lesser for it. Some songs/styles work well with keyboards, some don't. Overall, both lineups were good, but I agree they were MUCH better with Sammy Hagar. |

Sammy Hagar is like the Toby Keith of rock: he's safe, bland, and comes up with a good hook every now and then. I'm sure he would be fun to party with. Yes he has a good set of pipes and they're even aging well. He has a better vocal range than Roth. But his lyrics suck ass. |

As a devout Van Hagar fan I will admit Panama and Drop dead legs were the best songs they recorded. But Jump was like dividing all the other songs on 1984 by zero. |

My favorites were always the ones that didn't necessarily become popular on the radio. In fact some of the songs I thought were terrible were the popular ones (Panama being a good example)
Little Dreamer Feel Your Love Tonight Light Up The Sky Women In Love Spanish Fly Bottums Up Hell, all of Van Halen II Take Your Whiskey Home Fools Romeo Delight Loss of Control In A Simple Rhyme (one of the best Van Halen songs ever that is often overlooked) ALL of Fair Warning Hang 'Em High Secrets Cathedral Little Guitars The Full Bug Top Jimmy Drop Dead Legs Girl Gone Bad House of Pain And I don't care all that much for the Sammy Hagar years. |

There really are two band, VH-Dave and VH-Sammy. Let's not even talk about the other incarnation, because it's just sad.
I like them both, but given my age, I think of VH as VH-Dave as the default. I really like 5150, glad I happened upon this thread because I haven't listened to it in years and will cue it up in the rotation. Anyway, Sammy is a very cool guy (Dave is a DB, by all reports). Sammy "saved" my BiL's life. (Sort of) At the end of a VH-Sammy show in Philly in the late 80's, I think, my drunken and stoned BiL made it on stage and was getting manhandled by security (which, he admits were doing their jobs, if too enthusiastically) Sammy saw it and intervened saying something to the effect that he was just a fan who was having a good time and got a little carried away. He asked BiL if he was okay after the slight drubbing, escorted him to the edge of the public area and thanked him for coming to the show. Sammy is a shrewd businessman, so maybe he was just defusing a potential lawsuit. Even if that was the case, he was very cool about it. |

Wow, great list of songs. I forgot about all of these great tunes...off to Youtube! |
