| So I get home (rural area) from work earlier and I have no cellular signal (normally full signal) or land line connection. My first thought is shtf and all redneck comunication has been terminated. Is it government shutdown gone too far, some sort of NSA glitch, I was somewhat concerned. I then realized I had no OJ to mix with my tater juice and decided what the hell, if shit is going down I need a drink. Well, on the way to the store I realized what was going on. It seems that the crew repairing a bridge down the road cut through ATT&T's lines. So with Armageddon avoided, how in the hell does a land line break affect my cell service. All is well with cell service now obviously. |

Some of the verry remote ones are fed by microwave. |

They probably cut some power wires as well as communications lines. Cell Towers are connected to the PSTN via wired lines, DS1, DS3 and even optical lines. If those lines get cut the cell site would be unable to connect subscribers to the PSTN, Subscribers already affiliated with that tower might still be able to call other subs still affiliated with that tower. The tower would not be able to affiliate any new subscribers, so you would not see a signal. |

DS1= 1.5 meg DS3= 45 meg Optical lines= for att they have standardized on 100 meg per tower. In high traffic areas 200 meg. PSTN= public switch telephone network But really they are connected to a MTSO= mobile telephone switch office. |

The cell tower's got an intarweb line comin' in, that's what feeds it and that's what got cut. You swung in with your phone, asked the tower if you could use it, it said "nuh-uh". Depending on what fed it, it could be a pain in the ass, a royal pain in the ass, or a shitstorm. I expect it was probably a royal pain in the ass. |

Bo big deal but when I looked at my cell phone i had no signal. This was odd as the ATT tower is only about 500 yards from my house. I walked out side and no lights on the tower no lights in the distance. I was WTF! Most towers have or should have battery backup so they don't go down when they lose power. Power was only out for about an hour and the tower came back up when the power came back up. Guess the batteries had not been tested. The whole event made the hair on the back of my neck raise so used to the having the network! When it goes its like pulling the rug out beneath your feet! |

There's technology that makes you dependent on the whims of mother nature, corporations and governments - And then there's technology that makes you largely independent of it. Ham radio is definitely in the latter category. |
