Was just discussing one of the best westerns ever made. "Shane", made in 1953. I was 5 years old. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046303/?ref_=ttqt_qt_tt Starring Alan Ladd in the title role. A great story about real men standing up to evil cowards. Also some of the best quotes ever in a movie. Shane: A gun is a tool, Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that. And Jack Palance as one of the best "bad guys" to ever be in a western. He played Jack Wilson, a gun-for hire. Shane: So you're Jack Wilson. Jack Wilson: What's that mean to you, Shane? Shane: I've heard about you. Jack Wilson: What have you heard, Shane? Shane: I've heard that you're a low-down Yankee liar. Jack Wilson: Prove it. They just don't make them like they used too. |

Shane's wisdom about a gun being a tool seriously influenced and corrected my views of firearms, having grown up in the Bay Area of California and having to overcome the propaganda against firearms there.
Interesting information about the movie: Jack Palance couldn't handle a horse very well. In the movie there's a scene where he mounts his horse in such a careful, graceful manner that it's almost captivating to watch. In reality he couldn't mount it well so the director filmed Palance dismounting the horse and played it in reverse for the movie. |

A tool is a device that enables or magnifies your ability to accomplish a task. You could dig a hole with your hands or more effectively do it with a shovel. You could hurl a stone at an enemy with your hand or use a firearm to accomplish the same thing even more effectively. |

They sure-as-shit don't. Fantastic film, one of my all-time favorites. Quoted:

They just don't make them like they used too. They sure-as-shit don't. Fantastic film, one of my all-time favorites. Everything in it is a great life lesson. I loved that part where they decide to chop the roots and remove that big stump. If that's not a life lesson on determination and hard work, there isn't one. |

Great scene. The particular clip misses the part of the very wise dog, though. |

| Great movie and if anyone is every in Jackson, Wyoming they can drive by cabin used in the film. It is located near Kelly, Wyoming off Gros Ventre highway. The Grand Tetons make for a beautiful backdrop when viewing the old cabin. Be sure and bring a camera as there are tons of things to photograph in that part of the country. |

Lessons about hard work, arms and self defense, pride, tyranny, courtesy, etc. Joe Starrett manifests some of the greatest husbandly love and duty on film in just a few sentences: "I've been thinking a lot, and... ...I know I'm kinda slow sometimes, but I see things... And I know if anything happened to me that you'd be took care of." ... "Honey, you're the most honest and the finest girl that ever lived. I couldn't do what I gotta do if I hadn't always known I could trust you." |

I still wish I could color-code posters, it would prevent some of these mistakes.

All weapons are tools, but not all tools are weapons. I submit to you that hammers should no longer be called tools. Long before there were nails to be hammered, houses to be framed or fenders to be straightened, man was using the hammer to wage war on fellow man. As such, Home Depot must cease and desist the selling of such horrible weapons of war. I recommend that sellers must first obtain an FHL (Federal Hammer License) from the BATFHE (self-explanatory) at just a minor annual cost. Purchasers must submit an application Form 87 and pass a rigorous background check before obtaining such a lethal weapon. |
