I have a windows Vista machine. I recently had to restore it to factory settings and all has been running well. Went to power it up yesterday and it is stuck at a screen that says " verifying DMI pool data". Is it dead? what can I do to get it back up to get some data from the hard drive?

What kind of computer is it (brand, model) and why did you have to restore it to factory settings?

Batteries only last about a year so you might want to replace it.

I was installing a service pack( that I should have done years ago) and somehow windows corrupted. I used the factory Acer restore that is partitioned on the hard drive. I has been running good for a few months.

cmos is the most likely fix for this.

I powered down a d removed the battery.  Waited a few minutes, reinstalled the battery and powered back up. Now it won't start. Oh the power light comes on and it keeps beeping. Nothing appears on the monitor.

How many beeps?  Should be a repeating series of beeps and pauses.  Beeps will indicate what kind of problem you're having.  Figure out the sequence, and then Google.

Let us know what you find.

Steady even beeps keep repeating. Could a dead CMOS battery do this ?

They are cheap and worth replacing just to eliminate that from the list of causes  I've have had them last 10 years or more but you never know..

Huh? They last several years. In my over 25 years of PC usage, i've only had to change one battery, and that was for a brand new machine that i bought last year.

Depending on the BIOS version, the steady beeping could indicate a bad CMOS battery.  As others have suggested, replace the battery as a cheap way to rule out the CMOS battery as a cause.

What brand and specs of the problem computer?

Update.
Changed the CMOS battery and it did not help
I started unplugging stuff and tried re starting.  I unplugged the hard drive and it booted. Plugged the hard drive back in and it started up and is running fine
