| And do you like it? My job is going away to outsourcing, (SUCKS) but I have an immediate opportunity for a new job but it's second shift. I have worked first shift my entire life, and I'm trying to figure out how I will adjust to working till midnight. I'm more concerned about the adjustment for my dog who is used to walking in the evenings so he'll be sitting in the house all afternoon and night now. What is your schedule like? |

I worked 3-11 for a couple decades. I liked it for the first decade or so. I could go to the gym. Ride my bike. Do stuff.
Then it changed to 12:30 to 2100.Then to 1030 - 1900. That's a really bad time block because you can't really do anything. I liked it at first but I've matured into a day person I guess. It seems like most people out of school like evenings. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

2nd is the worst of all shifts
go into work in the afternoon and get off and its night time, so your free time is between 1am and 5am at least when you work 3rd shift you have the day if you need to get something done. I wouldnt work 2nd shift unless I was unemployed or the pay was something i couldnt turn down |

I worked some long stints on 2nd. Nobody else wanted to by choice, and you got stuck on it as a new hire. So that should tell you something. No social life and you won't see your kids if they're in school. If you stay up late after getting off your shift, you'll end up getting up just in time to go to work again. 
I always went to midnights as soon as I was able. |

If you need to get stuff done, wake up early. Nothing going on? Sleep in. Your choice. You can get stuff done during the day when 1st shift is at work and you get to sleep when 3rd shift is on. What's not to like? |

I hated 2nd shift so much that I traded with a guy and then worked 3rd shift (11-7) for four years. |

Worked them for many years off and on, (rotating shifts.) Not a bad shift if you at least have the weekends off. (I didn't) I would get home about 11:45, shower, wind down with a couple of beers, in the rack by 1:30, up at 9:30 and get stuff done before work at 3:00. DON'T get in the habit of staying up until 5am and sleeping till 1 in the afternoon. |

No alarm clock in the morning. Wake up on your own, do stuff. Make lunch. Take a nap. Then go to work... On your drive in: Traffic will be nonexistant (compared to what the day shift puts up with) You get out of work before the bars are really happening, There are no school busses clogging the road on your way home. Life is much much better. If you don't have kids in school.

I just transitioned to second shift (2 or 3 to 10:30 or 11:30 or so). I did this so I could take a full-time courseload and work full-time as well.
I did it two days and I can already tell it is going to be miserable. At least my GF is a thousand miles away for the year for an internship, so it's not going to interfere with our relationship.  it's really hitting me hard how shitty I'm going to feel for the next at least year.

| I work 2nd shift and don't like it. There is nothing to do at 12:00 am except go home. No restaurants are open, hard to meet and date women at that hour also. If you are married and wife works that shift then it could be fine but if single it sucks. I don't live in the big city like New York or some shithole like that so not as many late night/early morning options. |

Worked it for years, it is nice to be able to get things done in the morning and not have to rush to get it done on your lunch hour, bank, dentist, doctor appointments are all a lot easier.
Downside (?) is you don't get to see prime time TV. From MASH to Seinfeld I missed all the prime time shows Mork and Mindy, Cosby Show, you name it. Probably not as big a deal today. ETA - If single, you do tend to screw a lot of people you work with. |

Been on second most of my working life and once again, these are the perks, along with the less/no bosses thing which should not be underestimated, and sometimes a little extra change, and unless you become a boss  you should get first crack at any day slots.
Downsides, friends going camping leaving Friday, by the time you show up they're all passed out drunk. Same for a long road trip sounds great leaving when you get off less traffic right, so you drive all night everyone else sleeps, get there and you rack out, wake up for a few hours, then pile in the car Sunday cause everyone else has to be back for Monday morning so you get a fraction of the time visiting, or maybe got to do one or two of the dozen things everyone else did. Got a wife/gf working days, you might get to see her enough during the week to remember you're together (you have got to put effort into weekends), but then it might also be less child care costs. Single, well, during the week I never saw too many women out late, but I dated a string of bartenders, which was fun at the time, but very nearly made a severe alcoholic of me. No one else will respect your sleep schedule they almost never take your later work hours into consideration, family tends to think you're lazy since you're sleeping while they're up doing. I prefer days, but 6/7-3, I can't stand all the traffic/people out and about 5-7p. |

Well my kids are grown, in their 20's so the kids are not an issue. No GF at the moment so I guess that's not an issue. I have a lot of work to do on some vehicles I own so I guess doing it in daylight rather than night time is a plus. Plus all the daytime plusses people have mentioned on here. The base pay is a little less than the job I'm getting canned from but second shift has a 10% differential which will make up the difference and I'm paid any OT I have to put in. I'm still not crazy about the whole thing, plus an hour drive vs 10 minutes now, but it sure beats unemployment and interviewing for the next year while trying to survive on unemployment.

| I worked 2nd for quite some time, then took on 3rd shift for a change, but I really like 2nd shift. I can get a hell of a lot more things done in the morning/early afternoon. If the Mrs is off then we can go and do things together. I'm waiting for another 2nd shift to open up again and I'm going back to it. |

As an employee 2nd isn't bad, you get a few hours of the owner / management around, and it's the end of the day. The downside of 3rd is 2nd shift will leave you like shit, since it's the party shift, and you'll have to make sure to be extra on your toes and have your doings in order, becasue the bosses are rolling in at the end of the day, no matter what you do, 1st shift will still blame everything on you, and your second shift supervisor has more relaxed contact with management. Essentially shit rolls down hill and third shift gets it coming and going.
I've worked them all through the years, and have been on both ends of the employee / management / owner sides of it. Downside of second is if you have kids in school, you won't see them. |
