How would I go about installing a seconday operating system on it?  I would want Windows 8.1 to be able to dual boot along side OSX.

Thanks

Basically, you're going to use a tool called Boot Camp to partition your drive into two, and install Windows on the new partition. Go to your Applications, and find the Boot Camp setup app under utilities, it'll walk you through.

Here's the instructions on Apple's site:
http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macoscomponents

Alternatively, you can get VMware Fusion or Parallels, and run Windows as a virtual machine on your OSX desktop. That way you don't have to shut down to swap.

There are very (and I mean very) few reasons to dual boot. Get both...at the same time.

Purchase a copy of VMWare Fusion, and run 8 inside of a virtual machine.

Here's my MBP doing just that:

So the aforementioned solutions  works without much issue then I take it?  I do plan on upgrading the ram anyway, if thats even a concern.

Bump the RAM up to at least 8GB. I can tell you from personal experience that a late 2011 MBP will take 16GB.

VMWare Fusion is a fantastic product. You'll love it. There are very few reasons to actually dual boot (i.e., reboot your computer just to switch OS's). Run them concurrently.

VMWare Fusion's Unity mode. Here, we see Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (in a VM) appearing seamlessly with my native OSX applications. It's even in the dock.

[#11]
I was at a presentation the other day with the only MBP on a conference table full of Wintel laptops.  I always run in Unity mode and 2 execs from a partner were standing behind me going at my screen.

They were confused that I had Excel and Word opened and they were obviously not the Mac ports.

They really freaked when I flipped out of Unity to full screen and used the 3 finger swipe to switch back and forth from my OS X desktop to Win 8.

I said "Really? You guys are executives in a tech company and you are looking at my laptop like Spongebob and Patrick Star when they discover fire?  How do you not know about this stuff?".

They were just so firmly entrenched in the MSFT world that it never occurred to them that things like this were done and that the MBP's were easily powerful enough to run a VM this way.

ETA:  I've not tested it myself but one of our engineers told me not to bother allocating 8 gigs of RAM to my Win 8 VM and that it would work just fine, if not better, on 4 or even 2.

Is that because Fusion uses OS X to call hardware resources and doesn't need as much overhead?

You're probably taxing your VM's significantly more than I ever will.

I had to bump it to 4GB temporarily last week, while I was helping a guy with a PowerPivot table that was like a million rows. I literally ran out of memory, and it couldn't create the local compact DB.

This, but you may want to look into upgrading your RAM. Parallels is a virtual OS and when you start it up you will see it bog down the RAM if you do not upgrade. I upgraded my Macbook PRO to 16 gigs. Cost about $169.00 for 2 8 gig sticks.

I run VMware fusion on my MB Pro (16GB ram) and like subnet I have multiple VMs on it. I like it just fine but a co-worker does the same with Parallels and it is probably just as good. I just use VMware beause we have have a VMware server shop (and I run Workstation on my home PC) and I can run those VMs on that hardware without an issue (not that I've ever needed to). Either one is fine though.

I use Parallels because I wasn't aware of Fusion. They offered a discount for Parallels users and I tried it. They both seem about the same although I didn't do any hard comparisons. I have one app that I can't get to work under either, though. What's odd is that it worked fine under my VirtualBox VM when I was running Linux.

We're a heavy VMWare shop (in my earlier screenshot, you'll notice that all of my voice stuff is completely virtualized), so I just went with what works. I have zero complaints. It's possible that Parallels is every bit as good on a laptop/workstation, but I stick to what I know when making recommendations. I have no experience with Parallels in day-to-day use. I've only goofed with it.

<shrug>

The takeaway, is that if at all possible, he should be running Win 8 in a VM. Even VirtualBox (free!) would be preferable to dual booting, in my opinion.  I'm familiar with, and partial to VMWare, but I'm sure Parallels would get the job done, too.
