I ended up getting the iPhone 5 and tried putting all the iTunes backup onto my new phone but it didn't transfer any of my pictures.  I backed up my old phone before I went to get this one but not everything transferred back over like it was supposed to.  It worked fine when I had the 3GS and went to the 4.  Any thoughts?  Also does backing up your phone save web favorites?  Lost them too.   Thanks guys.

Update:  I ended up calling Apple to see what they could do.   I had four different backup dates in iTunes and my phone picked the wrong one.  Found the backup I made before I went to get my new phone and chose that date to restore from and now I have everything back!  All photos, favorites, and app settings.  I'm thrilled with Apples customer service and help received today.

It shoud restore just like the older ones but the 5 is kind of a step where you start a few things over.

You will need to import your pics back in from iPhoto. You have to import them to iphoto separately from a backup to save them.

Web favs should have saved. No idea there.

That depends.. did you ever sync your old phone with your computer/itunes?

Basically, if the photos only existed on your old phone, and no where else (such as icloud or itunes), then yeah they are gone.

If you have the old phone you can transfer them to iCloud or iTunes as a back up and then transfer them back to your new phone.

iTunes does not save or store photos. Need iCloud or manually import to iPhoto as I understand it.

AT&T took the old phone in on trade so it's gone.  I did back it up to iTunes beforehand.  I should of stored them in iCloud also.  Never thought of that till it was to late.

I've never done that, and never lost any photos when I got a new phone.  I just plug it into my PC and let itunes do its backup thing every now and then.  I don't even use icloud.

Do you remember the folder name on your computer where iTunes synced pictures?

It should be listed on your iTunes under photos. Mine is called "pictures". It's in the My Pictures folder.

Have you tried to just sync the photos?

If sync doesn't work and you can find the right folder on your computer, you can go to the folder, select all (ctrl a)
Connect your phone to your computer with the cord.  Go to my computer and find your phone. Click on the folders until your pictures come up.

Right click and paste.

If you can't find the folder and sync doesn't work, I out of ideas.

I guess it does or did. Someone above said it makes it's own folder. I always get a prompt to import the pics that were not previously imported.

The only thing I found was in "My pictures" was a folder called iPod photo cache.  It has a bunch of files in but they won't open and shows zero photos when I go into iTunes and select that folder to sync.   Is that folder what I'm looking for?

Actually if you had done the encrypted backup everything would be there.  I did that going from my 3GS to the 5 and the only thing I had to set up again was my Bluetooth.  All my pictures, Safari favorites, everything was there.  But you have to use the encrypted backup.  I understand your phone is gone now, but maybe this will help future users.

I don't think so.

In my My Pictures there was a folder called Pictures. Every time I synced my iPhone the new pictures (added to the old) ended up there.

When you try to sync just the Photos (or whatever iTunes calls it) does iTunes ask what folder to sync to?

I never tried to just do the photos but when I sync I phone it puts everything in the iTunes folder.  That shows all my music and apps in there but no photos.

Good to hear. iTunes really tries to make it too easy to restore, but once you attempt an unsuccessful or partially successful backup, it will immediately back up the setup you just made a minute ago and now that is your default restore point. Once you figure out the backup you're trying to restore to your new phone is dated only a couple of minutes previously, you can figure out that you need to try to find the one you did previously, when you know you had the old phone in hand.

I usually also run a manual backup of photos on old phone before even taking the new one out of the box (as a belt and suspenders approach), so even if something goes tragically wrong the pictures will still be backed up. Apps can be easliy re-download; once  in a lifetime pron cannot.

Then it was under new phone warranty. Otherwise you provide CC then they answer your question unless you have AppleCare.
