| Anybody own a good quality one, carry it?Just curious what the opinion is on them....??? |
| I used to carry High Standard derringers. They can be fired by pulling the trigger. No cocking a hammer. You fire them with your middle finger. They are the best derringer. Now that guns like the Ruger LCP exist, stack derringers aren't as good. I wish I had kept one High Standard for the cool factor, but as a weapon they don't make a lot of sense now. |

There are some advangtages to a Derringer. They can be carried in places on you body where you cannot carry another gun. The High Standard mentioned above is a good example, it is very light and thin.
It never jams. Some Derringers are heavier and about the same size as some of the small semiautos, but still they never jam. I put the small Mini Revolvers in the same catagory as the smaller derringers, they are small and light and again can be carried easialy. I live in the country and carry a 22 Mag mini revolver in my pocket 100% of the time loaded with CCI shotshells for snakes. We have some big ones here, and they not only eat my catfish, but try to get my chicken eggs as well. I killed one just a week or so ago. When I leave the house I load it up with HP ammo and carry it in my shirt pocket as a backup. You may not believe this but I can hit a man sized target with it at 100 yards. I have practiced a fair amount with it, just for fun. There is a new Derringer out that comes in 45 ACP or 9mm that is built like the old High Standard. My buddies gun store has some ordered, I am anxious to handle one. They do have a use. |

hi standards are interesting derringers with a different design from most... my dad has one and i love it
i am currently looking for a "double tap" .45acp derringer... double action 45 and it holds two extra rounds in the grip never shot one but the bond arms ones look real nice |

I bought an American Derringer model DA38 in .40S&W once upon a time. It utterly sucked.
You know that trigger pull in your nightmares, where you're using every ounce of strength to fire your pistol into some psychotic or huge monster that is about to kill you, and it just won't fucking fire? That was its trigger. You know how you finally manage to pull that trigger in your nightmare and the gun goes "click"? Yup, it did that quite frequently. There was a primer strike, it just wouldn't reliably set them off. ETA: Oh, yeah, mic214 reminded me, I think that's what they changed their name to now, "Bond Arms". |

I wouldn't depend on one to defend myself. At the most, you've got two shots, and it's a single action with shitty sights. can't argue with that, but to be fair, derringers are contact weapons, not something you engage with across the room with. one shot is to the face, the other shot is a coup de gras ,so no witnesses.

I'm curious as to the situation where you'd carry it vs something better/bigger/higher cap/modern? Not trying to be a dick, I think they're cool, but 2 shots in a small, hard to hold gun isn't appealing. Out to dinner , dressed up . My HS 22 mag takes up less space than a cell phone and does more damage. I don't like the pocket pistols, shitty fit in my hand, and just an overall uncomfortable gun. The HS has a nice grip and works every time. I'd take 2 shots over nothing anytime. There are times and places having my standard carry pcs. G 19 / 26 or walther P99 isn't an option. It's also one of my favorite pcs to have when travelling through less CCW friendly states, locked and unloaded of course:0 |

They are two different companies. American Derringer is still in business and they still makes the DA38. it looks like a copy of the old High Standard derringer. Bond Arms has never made anything that resembles the DA38. American Derringer I have not had any problems with my Bond Arms derringer..... |

Quoted: Get one in .45-70. If you miss your attacker he'll still die in the fire. Last year on Gunbroker there was an American Derringer in 45-70 listed with a buy it now price of $400. By the time I talked myself into buying it, it was sold... |
