I've got one propane tank without the Overfill Protection Device (OPD) valve that will soon be empty.  I know I can't get it re-filled.  What do I do with it?  Exchange?  Where?  How Much?  What's the best route on this?  I want to try frying a turkey.

Turn it in on an exchange for a new tank and fry that turkey! ( we have exchange stations at gas stations here in Ok. don't know about your area of the country.)

Yeah, we got these x-change things too.  How does it work?

I brought one of my old tanks to Lowes and traded it for a refilled tank with the OPD.  The compay who refills them is Rino.  It says on the tank to bring them back when empty and exchange them for a full Rino tank.  Is this just a line of bull to get your business or can any filling station fill these tanks?  They charge $19 for the exchange and the welding suply store charges $12 for a refill.

I'm no Hank Hill, but to answer your questions:

You can take your tank to a place (don't ask me where one would be where you live) and they can install the OPD valve. Is it worth it? No.

Buy a new tank when they go on sale, $20-$35.

Take your non OPD tank to a place that exchanges propane tanks and exchange it. For about an $8.00 charge they will give you a tank with an OPD on it on top of the $13-$18 or so for a full tank.

If you own a tank with an OPD on it and the date is good on the tank (12 years from date of manufacture IFRC) then you can take it to any propane refill place and they will fill it.

Get that old tank filled up one last time, get some tannerite, some road flares and perhaps a gallon can of gasoline with your favorite center fire rifle and a very remote area....well, you get the picture.

Don't empty it, buy a new OPD tank, and take the old one out to a barren location far from flammable materials and shoot it :) Oh, set a road flare up about 18" away from it, downhill if possible, and a bit to the side.  Ensures proper pyrotechnics [:D]

And just so you know. U-haul has places that refill as well for about 8 bucks.
Check out their site to find one near you. There are like 15 or so in the north dfw area but only 3 refill.
