I figured I'd ask GD about a concern regarding growing a beard. Concerned about looking grungy at work while beard is growing in. I sit in a cube all day with various meetings throughout the week. What's the input? Keep it trimmed while its filling in or just let it go?

Let it grow

Don't trim it or touch it at all for an entire month.  You will only mess it up.

After 30 days, you can lightly trim the mustache and the neck.

After that, it's by feel.  Less is more.

As far as it looking scraggly, you're a man right?  Men have facial hair.  Own it.

I'm gonna end up with a fuckin neck beard...I know it...

When I would grow a beard, I would just let it go.  I would trim the mustache to keep it off my lip, and clean up neck if I was feeling inclined to do so.  With every epic beard there is gonna be a window were it looks kind of like shit, (not not long, but yet it's not short and neat either).  You gotta power thru the urge to trim it up and continue to let it grow to its full and majestic beauty.

I miss my beard .

My beard grows in all white trashy like Joe Dirt. It's rather pathetic.

Let it grow.

After a couple of weeks the hairs will curl around and start bothering you. Stay the course.

Then dont trim anything until the bearf averages 2.5 inches or better. Only trim a little, then wait a week or a month before any further trimming. Its way too easy to mess things up so go slow.

Patience.

If the Good Lord put hair on your face why would you cut it off?

IF....you can actually grow a beard give it about two weeks then trim up your neck line. Lets everyone know, yes I'm doing this on purpose.
When it starts to itch put a little baby oil on it at night to keep it soft or use hair conditioner. This stage will pass quickly.
Neat and trimmed will go better than the Duck Dynasty look

No ones had something to the effect of "shave, you look like shit" said to them at work about it?

I trim up my neck while it is growing in, pretty much from the Adam's apple to bottom of my throat.
8/4/2013 5:01:50 PM EDT
[#15]
I keep the neck and upper check trimmed and cut back the stray tufts that show up.

I think it all depends on how quickly your facial hairs grows. If I tried to grow a beard with any real substance it would literally take months. So I would look like crap for a long time
My old college roomate could grown one overnight. A girl would tell him he would look good with a beard and the next day he would have one. Another girl would say shave it and he would and than another would say grow a goatee and the next day he would have one.

Shave the neck while you are growing it out and keep your haircut fresh. It offsets the look of homeless man for the first month. Beard trimming is for nancy pants hipsters.

Plenty, but screw 'em. Let it grow, resist the urge to trim or "even it up" for at least a month (you'll screw it up, trust me). By that time you'll be able to see how your beard wants to grow and you can guide it. Like has already been said, when trimming less is more.
8/4/2013 5:12:36 PM EDT
[#23]
Trim your neck every couple days to keep a clean line.
Don't let your throat tee outgrow your beard.
You may need to take some scissors and uncover your lip after a few weeks. Not sure how strong your stash is.
Any of your coworkers that talk trash are just jealous.
Good luck.

I had a buddy like that when we were in high school.  We would tell him not to shave Thursday so he could buy us beer Friday.

Good tips guys. It's been 4 days since I've shaved, I'm going to have to work hard in the morning to not shave it all.  I guess I'm not looking forward to the itching and sweating since its now  the hottest part of the year.

Wooooo beard tiem!

Yeah. After the first few days you establish a line so as to say you are growing a beard. It doesn't look like hell that way. After you've established a trimmed up beard you can slowly add to it.

The big thing at work is to keep it looking neat.

You won't need to use fertilizer.

I grew mine while on vacation for a week, so the really scruffy looking part happened while not going to work
when mine starts to get longer the hairs go at all sorts of weird angles so I usually keep it fairly short but still long enough to not look like crappy 3 days growth
8/4/2013 6:14:34 PM EDT
[#29]
Keep the neck shaved while you grow in the rest.  You'll look neater.  I shave my neck along the line from the corner of the jaw under the ear, to where the underside of the jaw meets the neck.

This from a guy who has cut off his beard twice in his adult life, and grew it right back both times.
8/4/2013 6:21:37 PM EDT
[#30]
I waited until I took a week off for vacation to grow mine, and then I came back to work with a beard.

In my experience, the beard acts more like radiator fins and keeps your face cooler.  Plus it keeps the sun off the skin too.  It does not bother me the least even in 115 degree temps.
Don't forget it will go through an "ugly phase."  Keep it going!  Once past that, its clear sailing!

Started my beard in the mid 80's.  Still here!

Yup then if it grows in patchy or not as thick as you want occasionally you should shave it and regrow it.

Also go here for tips...depending on how serious you are.

it takes me about a week to get to a growth that I can edge.  After that, I only edge it again once every week, until I get to the mark that I want to trim the whole thing.  I edge my cheekbone area and neck area.

That's at four days - I last shaved Wednesday morning.

I'm not too excited about how it looks now, but my gf pulled up some 'old' photos of college when I had about a month of growth and I thought they looked good.

Take biotin and a multivitamin daily to boost your beard growth. Rub in some jojoba oil every couple days to keep it conditioned. Remember, shampoo will strip your beard of oils, so only shampoo once every three days or so.

Give it time to grow in. Don't get discouraged by a bad beard day. If you feel like shaving it off, wait a day. I'm at nine months or so and mine is still filling in. Good luck!

I grew one for 8 weeks due to shingles.  I started seeing it and decided it was time to cut it off.  I let it run wild and loved not shaving.  I was told that I had the grizzly Adams look

It felt good to shave it off.  Had to go back to double edged razor and have been getting good shaves ever since.

I'd definitely leave it alone for the full 30 days.  No trimming at all.  Needs to fill in.

My beard used to be about half that long. Took about 10 years to get it there. I was bucarooin' and living in Montana at the time.

When I checked back into the 3-piece-suit business world...I felt I needed to cut it off.

I still slack on shaving unless I have a meeting or have to work out of a client's office.

If the Good Lord wanted us to shave....He'd have made us with sharper fingernails.

This, as far as the edging.

Use your daughter's (or wife's) foo-foo hair stuff on it to stop the itch rather than baby oil.
