| Saw that in the theater with my dad when I was like 16. We didn't talk a lot in the car after as I recall. If you weren't of age at the time you don't understand how shocking it was. Kind of like the young guy who recently started that "Red Dawn Sucks" thread. Context has a LOT to do with it. |

Those films did help a lot of guys I know to explain some of what they went through to friends and family who couldn't grasp what serving in Viet Nam really was. Now with everyone having a video camera what's gone on in OIF and OEF will be easier for those who weren't there to relate to those who were there. |

After watching platoon all I could remember was the brutality our troops inflicted on the innocent civilians of Vietnam. oliver stone is a cunt butthole. Sorry about the using the C word. |

I had the Barnes, Elias and Taylor figures they made, what, 10 years ago now? I forget what happened to them... I might still have them boxed up in a closet somewhere. Last I heard they were worth like two hundred bucks each. |

Completely not about Platoon:
I've always felt Hamburger Hill was the superlative representation of Vietnam on film. It had all the "madness" and the "war is bad" stuff but the characters, their motivations and presentations felt the most authentic and not "some director trying to make a point". Now back to the Oliver Stone gang bang. |

And somehow Hamburger Hill does it without the usual overt Hollywood political messages inserted. But I admit I do like Platoon and FMJ too. ETA: dang, one post late, touche JsARCLIGHT. |

I didn't get that at all. I got that it sucks to fight insurgents, they are everywhere and everyone. Even the good guys make mistakes, it's part of war. American soldiers do their best to be "the good guys", but shit happens. I personally feel that the only people who can judge war crimes are soldiers who served in the same theatre, at the same time, in similar units, as the accused. Only they understand the nature of that war, the rest of us have no right to judge, we weren't there. |
