OK, I realize this may be a stretch but the vast knowledge and experience of ARF never ceases to amaze so what the hell. I am considering building a platform for my Sleep Number king size bed. I have a standard king size metal frame currently but it sits low (no underbed storage) and creaks with the slightest movement. Has anyone built themselves a platform so I can get rid of the cheap riser (no box spring needed for Sleep Number), raise the overall height ~ 6-8" and have a solid platform that doesnt make a bunch of noise everytime I roll over? What I was thinking was 2x8 frame with 2 or 3 crossmembers with 3/4" oak plywood decking. Then use desired height 2x6 legs 2 pieces screwed together at 90* angle. Use carraige bolts to attach the frame to the legs. My goal is to have ~12" underbed clearance for storage bins with no center legs or supports. I want to just put the mattress on the platform and lose the cheap riser that comes with the sleep number bed. The whole things doesnt need to move so wheels are a non issue. Suggestions or experience? |

I just helped my daughter build a queen size captains bed out of 3 sheets of 1/2 inch plywood, a couple 2x4's and drawers from an old dresser.
Works great and was pretty cheap. I'll see if I can get some pictures and or draw up the plans later if you're interested. ETA, we used 2 sheets of cheap OSB for the decking, it doesn't need much strength with proper bracing. |
| I've been wondering the same thing and had been running some plans through my mind. I'm tired of cheap bed designs that don't hold up and are noisy. One of the plans I had was to build a 2x4 from around 4x4 corners with slats and a drop in sheeting that supports the box spring and mattress and conceals stored items that are meant for long term storage. I planned on using a 1x4 or 1x6 wood for the exterior finish. I haven't put it on paper yet, but I can see it in my mind. But I was honestly doing the same thing you are and kind of exploring someone else's superior design before i committed to my own. |
