I'm elbow-deep in repairing my cheap Whirlpool clotheswasher, and am wondering if I can safely remove and discard the band brake. Does it really serve any purpose besides bringing the drum to a faster stop during the spin cycle (e.g., a safety measure)? If so, I think I can manage enough intelligence to avoid sticking my arms inside the drum until it stops spinning. Also, does anyone have any secrets for an easy way to replace the main thrust (or "saddle") bearing? I'd hate to disassemble the entire motor/clutch assembly, but it looks like that's the only way to reach the damned thing — |
