So I got my bday coming up soon. This will be #44 so I was thinking about getting a .44 lever action.

I've done some minimal reading and it appears that the better loading rifle would be a pre-Remington Marlin 336.

I've had a couple in .30-30 over the years and I like the rifle.

However, that Henry keeps winking at me from behind the counter whenever I just sorta happen to have an "errand" to run in town lately.

Other than the front of the tube load which I never like in anything, is there anything about the Henry that says "NO" that I should be aware of?

If it was me celebrating #44, I would get a 1944 M1 Garand battle rifle with numbers, catouches, etc. all intact.

The Henry 44 screams quality.  They are very well made.  The fit and finish is IMHO better than any marlin.

The thing that sells the Marlin over the others is the ease of field-stripping. If you're going to hunt with it, get the Marlin. If it's a range toy, it doesn't matter.

That's a thought...for some reason that didn't occur to me.

Still think I dig the .44 lever this year though. But, now I'm not sure

It seemed that the action was...not smoother per se...more clockwork maybe, on the Henry. I dug the one I finger fucked at any rate.

Actually, I really do want one to really use. But I want it easy on the eyes too and the Henry is purdier by a long shot in my opinion.

How bad is cleaning the Henry anyway?

Really looking for a lever gun. My first rifle bigger than a .22 was a Savage Model 99 and I've had a soft spot for levers ever since.

I love the 99s so very much.

If you can find a JM proofed Marlin, go that route.  I haven't heard bad things about the Henrys, but I don't own one so I can't speak directly.  My Marlin has been a great gun though.
