Have a 94 Ranger 4.0v6 2 wheel drive. I'm trying to change the shoes on the rear drums, but I cant get the damn drum off. I have tried everything I can think of and need help. The parking brake is not set. I have backed off the adjusting screw but the drum will still not come off. I have tried tapping it with a hammer and tried using a screw driver to pop it off, but both sides are still stuck. The drum will move slightly (maybe 1/8") but thats it. Any suggestions? The book says there are retaining nuts but I don't see any, does anybody know if there are any, and if so where they would be? I'm running out of ideas. Every drum I have worked on before just slipped right off no problem. Help...! |
| Well, regarding whether there are retaining nuts or not, I don't know, BUT I have come across a set of drums once that were really bad. The shoes had actually gone so far into the drum material that there was a ridge keeping the drum from coming off. LOTS of beating with a hand sledge and I was able to move things around (good thing it was a Dana 60 FF with applicable brakes or its woulnd't have taken that beating) I stuck a large screwdriver in from the side and caught the edge of one shoe. Then, keeping pressure on the first, I got a second in about a third 'way round, and then had a helper to get a screwdriver in another third around, and we al pried at the same time...HARD. Pop! The drum came off. |
| I've got a old-style Bronco and a guy told me once that with really worn shoes to adjust the shoes all the way in,sounds like you have already tried that though, I have seen some hubs that have rusted/jammed up to the studs, try spraying the studs with W-D,where they come thru the hub and make sure thats not where your problem is. If all else falls,(and I hate to say this)you might have to go the library and look at a maintenance manual, good luck.....edit:Because I cant spell |
| Back them in ALL the way. See if there are clips around the studs. Sometimes there are two of them. Take a Big Hammer and hit on the front of the drum. Not the side or Back but close to the Flange. Usually that does it. Make sure you soaked the drum and flange fral good |
