Will it have XP mode? I have an old designjet plotter that is only supported through windows XP. Will I be able to run it then?

if it doesn't, you might look into running a virtual machine with windows XP for printing purposes.  (I refuse to install windows 8, it's a phone OS.)

I'm running it on a surface pro, haven't checked into any of the compatibility modes. If I get a chance I see what all it has.

If you have a second can you get me a link to one of those. Thanks from a computer idiot.

Windows 8 included virtual machine.

Detailed hyper-V instructions

short version of the long instructions is that you will enable this hyper-v, then do some convuluted microsoft crap to allow you to use a windows XP install disc to install windows XP alongside windows 8, and run it at the same time.

There are likely better options, but this one doesn't require anything you don't already have, i think.

So HP won't make drivers for the newer OS?

Why not setup an old XP computer if you're that devoted to an old printer?

No, it isn't.

Windows 8 (even without 8.1) does have the ability to run programs in XP compatability mode.  If it's pure driver issue, it might not work, but you could try right clicking on the installer file, properties, compatability, run in compatability mode for XP3, run as administrator.

On an older Toughbook I was able to get some XP drivers installed this way.  No idea if it will work in this case, but it's worth a try.  Barring that, just run XP in a VM.

sure it isn't actually a phone os, and I can use it, but it was clearly intended for touchscreens and/or people who use their smartphones a lot and like big retarded icons.

This is how I know that I'm getting old, tech-wise

it's a plotter - reaalllllly big fancy ass printer.  probably a decent option though, I'm sure a reasonably cheap garage sale POS could do the job?

if the aforementioned XP compatability mode doesn't work, and you don't want to set up a new physical machine, then the virtual machine is basically your only option AFAIK

I have a Win 8 tablet, and YES, it does have XP Compatibility Mode. You right click the executable icon or shortcut, go to Properties, and it's somewhere in there.  I had to try that with an older program.

The driver model changed from Windows XP to Windows Vista. It's one of the few areas I wouldn't expect compatibility mode to work.

When I had a similar issue, I needed to install XP Mode. Now that XP Mode is excised in Windows 8, he probably needs to set up a VM to do what he wants.

Or, get a Windows 7 machine (it's like $300 at Walmart), install XP Mode, and use it that way.

link to driver file?

remember to run as administrator after you set it to windows XP compatability mode.

if that works, great, otherwise try the virtual machine thing, it's kind of a pain in the ass but it's handy to know how to do.

why won't the vista driver work?

(vista, 7, and 8 use mostly the same drivers i thought?) compatability for those os's if not would work better.

Only Metro is a phone/tablet interface.  The rest of 8 is good.  Better than 7 IMO.   Replace what's missing from the desktop w/ something like Start8 and you can ignore metro.

lol, I was mostly exaggerating.  It's just effort to switch to a new os that I really don't need yet.

When windows 8 ships with a standard interface I can easily toggle to (kind of like the subnet rant thread) I may get it, but until then I really have no need.

So I download the XP drivers. It downloads in a zip file. I unzip and right click on all files and none give me the option of compatibility mode. Is compatibility only available on the pro editions?

I dealt with this exact issue.  I don't know why HP won't update their drivers.

Your options are:

1.  Use a dedicated XP computer for printing to your old designjet.
2.  Run XP in a VM on your windows 8 machine (possibly - sometimes this may not work due to the way it shares the physical computer's USB and/or LPT ports)
3.  Try to find 3rd  party drivers for your Windows 8 machine to print to the designjet.
4.  Buy a modern plotter.

Compatibility mode will not work with the driver.  At least it didn't for me in the 20 minutes of trying.

download the vista driver...it has a better chance of working with 8.

also, compatibility mode is not a menu option - you need to right click>Properties

it's going to be in one of the tabs.

Yeah I ran compatibility trouble shooter and get a incompatible program message. I am getting a license for XP and setting up a virtual machine and see if it works.

you will only get it on unzipped files that are executable, or shortcuts to executables.

Extract all of the files to a new folder, then check each file for a compatibility mode.

Failing that, use the vista driver....
