If ever there was a place to compile a list of search key words that are objectionable, GD is that place. Here's the back story. I have twin 11 year old boys. One of them came to me last night and told me he'd been surfing some porn on Google Images and that he didn't feel right about it. We talked at length about the subject and if it's a problem for him, it's a problem for me. He is at that stage where he's curious but not really ready to handle the answers. He even showed me what he'd been viewing and it was definitely not COC even by BOTD standards. And since I'm not really a huge fan of pornography and it's objectification of sex I really don't want the stuff under my roof. I would prefer that he come to me with his questions and concerns rather than turn to some of the freaks floating around on the internet. I trust him as far as I can trust a young boy but as part of my policy of not wanting porn in our homes I'm going to filter the internet traffic we allow in. I honestly feel sorry for kids these days because the filth they get exposed to in their early formative years is just mind-blowing. I'd prefer they develop a healthy and sane understanding of sex and keep it in an appropriate context. Yeah, good luck with that with boys. But it's My House and My Rules. Mostly I'm going to rely on OpenDNS. It does a reasonably good job and allows me to white list domains that we want in that are judgment calls. The bugger is with Google Images. So I'm putting a policy in place on my router that blocks certain key words in searches. That's where you guys come in. What key words do you like for doing searches? I don't care if I get everything but I want to at least keep them honest. So fire away. |

Sounds like you're doin' a good job Dad.
It's a fine line between exposing kids to reality, and not over doing it to the point it's harmful to them. And every child is different. (says the know it all with no children) But I do know what it's like to be a child. Keep up the good work, if he feels comfortable enough to come to you with this, you are doing something right. |
