Based on the less than wonderful experiences of a family member and his Kimber, why not start with a Springfield or a Colt... or even a Rock Island?

If it has the POS external extractor stay away from it, I would personally stick with SA.

Friends who buy a pistol just to own one and not because they shoot more than 50 rounds a year absolutely rave about how nice their Kimbers are because they're pretty.

Friends who buy them and shoot the shit out of them have had less glowing reviews.

I've never owned one, but that's my 2nd hand experience with them.

are Rock Islands that better over a Kimber? holy crap. how does an American Manufacturer fall so low in quality to be bested by a Phillapinne gun? or are they very competent?

Shooting 1911's in general is overly complicated for many of the metro-sexual girly men here.

I had a Kimber and couldn't get rid of the piece of shit fast enough, ftf after ftf after ftf. Bought a Wilson and it runs like a swiss watch. Bought an Ed Brown Classic Custom, runs like a Swiss watch. Kimbers suck FBHO nuts in my opinion.

It's uncanny, FPNI.  I had a Kimber Custom TLE and sold it after I bought a SA TRP.  Much better gun.

For what it's worth two shooters in the shop today were talking about how much they like their Warriors over the TRP. Me personally, I'd skip the TLE and go with the Warrior or TRP.

In that same price range you might consider a Dan Wesson or better yet a Les Baer Premiere II. Go over to the 1911Forum.com and look at the reviews of different 1911s. Keep in mind the 1911 fan typically has one manufacturer that they really love and they consider all other manufacturers sub-par.

I don't have a TLE II but for the past 10 yrs my EDC has been a Kimber CDP II. It is the gun I take to most of my pistol courses and it has never failed me. The only trouble I ever had was a magazine that failed to keep the slide locked back when empty. Not the guns fault.

Don't blame the gun if you fail to clean and lubricate adequately or use shitty ammunition

I have a tle r/l 2 and have never had a single FTF,fte. Any problems at all. Mine runs great. 2k+ rounds through it. It shoots great, and has a great feel for me.

I do have a friend that bought the base model Kimber and it was shit. Fte all the time.  Had to send it back for service, but after a tune-up it was fine.

This was a new ammo test resently. 10yds 7rds.

I have owned two Kimbers. One was an older Custom II that ran perfectly. I put roughly 3500 rounds through that gun and loved it. The second was a newer commander size TLE II. That gun had FTF and FTE problems through the 500 rounds I put through it. I sold it and told myself I wouldn't purchase another new/newer Kimber. YMMV

Use to be my daily carry, but with NC Summers I switched to a G19. Still, this is what I use in three gun matches and is what I shoot best.  A bit more then 50 rnds a year, maybe 55 or 56

I've got an older Kimber and it's been one of the best in my 1911 family history.  However, with the less than joyous reports/reactions of the more recent Kimber offerings, I tend to agree...Rock Island, ATI, Taurus (and I cringe on that one...lol), etc., if money is an issue.  If not, then look to Colt, Springfield, and others in that category.  I'm not a fan of Springfield DA pistols....but heard good things about the SA 1911s.  If it were my $$ in this situation, I'm all in on a Sig & forget about Kimber altogether unless you can find an older one.

The developed the .45ACP in part to kill hopped-up Filipino suicide bombers, so....maybe??

FYI: I am half Filipino.  I must be racist against myself, cuz I love my .45's.

I've used my Kimber Ultra Carry for fifteen years now.  No more feeding problems than the 1911 Series 70 I usually have at the range at the same time.  I'll chalk those feed problems up to ammo more than the guns, because both guns will have problems with the same batches of ammo.  Overall I'm happy with my Kimber and seriously considering buying another one in a full-sized model.

I had a family member that used to work for Kimber and was in a position to buy a couple at incredible deals.  I had a CDP, TLE, and Custom Covert.  All of them shot very well at first.  Unfortunately, they all became increasingly unreliable as time went on.  Within probably 2,000 rounds they all got to the point where they couldn't go one or two mags without choking, or doing shit like locking the slide back on a loaded mag in the middle of shooting.  I only ran Power Mags and Wilson Combat mags, so I knew that wasn't an issue... I tried different lube, new springs, polish the feed ramp, nothing really worked.  At first it started with hollowpoints... by the end they wouldn't feed standard ball.

I sold them, no more Kimbers for me.  Take that for what it's worth.

You will get 2000 answers from only 1000 gun guys.   It is a great gun.   Is it the best 1911, probably not, but you could buy a used car for what the best ones go for.   Are there a lot of worst choices absolutely.    Would I own one, in a NY minute (7 rounds only)

So buy it!   Just fair warning  they are like black rifle they seem to breed once you bring one home.

Glad you've had a good experience.  That's clearly not been the case for everyone.  If I was a gambling man, I'd pick one up.  But when there are so many other 1911 models out there that don't have the hit or miss reputation, I don't see why you'd pick one up.

Kimber are still in NY as well, aren't they?  Some folks might not want to support a company that pays taxes to Cuomo.

Nothing wrong with my Kimber TLE RL II and I fire 200 rounds a week with it. My boss has had his for years. He's used it here, Astan, Pstan and other places with thousands upon thousands of round through it. It's just fine as well.

I've had a Kimber Stainless Target II for at least 7 years. It's a great gun and has been reliable with everything that I've run through it. Yes, it gets shot and has at least 5,000 rnds though it. A friend picked up a Kimber about 3 years ago and hers has been problem free. Another friend just picked up a Kimber in the fall and it too has been trouble free. I can't remember the models.
On the other hand, I've had two Springfield M1911s. One was purchased in the late 1990s and went back to the factory 3 times in order to be somewhat reliable. I purchased a Springfield Loaded a little over a year ago and it took two trips back to the factory in order to be reliable. The Loaded is now a great gun but I'll never buy another Springfield M1911 again.
I suppose my friends and I have the only reliable Kimbers, and I purchased the only unreliable Springfields ever produced (according to the interwebs).

Get a SA or S&W E-Series, unless you like sending guns back to the factory or repairing them yourself. Kimber isn't the company they used to be.

I like mine, it has been flawless. With that being said I probably would buy a Dan Wesson. I think the base model Kimbers are a good value, when you start shelling $1500+ on a Kimber you are wasting money in my opinion.

To recap, the Custom II and the TLE are good pistols for a good price, if you can save and buy a Dan Wesson do it. High dollar Kimbers are a waste of money.
