I use to play a lot. Then, back in the late 70's, a good friend of mine beat me
3 times in a row. And i said, fuck it, and never played again. Do you play? |

I do and my kids know how.
Back when I was little, my dad played in local chess tournaments. I played against him for many years. His attitude was to play his best and if I beat him, it was because I played a better game and earned the victory. It took years of losses, but I still remember that first win. My wife plays, but there was a 3 year period where she didn't play against me. I had used the "fools mate" on her and she didn't like that at all.

I improved my game a bit once, at least i feel as tho it improved, by playing a
game against myself. Sounds funny. Don't know if any of you have ever done it or not. It does take disciplane. You are litterally thinking against yourself. Tempting to cheat but there would be no point in that. Try it. Not easy. |

My best friend from college is really, really good. I've been playing the guy for about 10 years, and about 3 months ago I actually beat him, first time I've ever taken a game off of him. I'm pretty sure that's the last time as well, but it was beautiful. I used a discovered attack against his queen and king with a bishop. Snatched his queen out from under him and he resigned. To be perfectly honest, however, I think if we'd kept playing I'd have eventually screwed it up and he'd have still won On the other hand, morale is part of the equation of battle too and I really came out on top in that aspect.

I used to play. My grand mother taught me at a young age. I've been looking for a set that shows the moves on the pieces so i can teach my wife. You might try signing her up on Chess.com. With a paid membership, there's a tactics trainer that she can use to help her recognize basic patterns quickly. It's a useful learning tool. |
