My wife and I have personal property insurance through USAA that has caps on what they'll pay out for firearms ($2500) and jewelry ($1000). If we buy a supplemental policy for firearms, we have to provide serial #, make, model, caliber/gauge, etc.
Does anyone have a policy like this? Pros? Cons? |

I have a zero liability rider for my firearms, optics, etc. If they get lost or stolen they will pay out....I have never given the number of guns/optics, type, serial numbers... nothing. They just had me pick a price, and I pay based on that price.
They don't care what it is and they don't want to know. This same insurance company gave me $500 for the food in my refrigerator when the power was out for 2 weeks and all the food went bad. No questions asked they didn't care what I had in the fringe, they just gave me a flat fee. |
| I have a policy with Collectibles Insurance instead of going the route of a rider on my home owners. Covered for up to $10k, for something paltry like $75/yr. No serial numbers, or even an inventory was given. Covers everything too. Guns, optics, ammo, mounts, reloading gear, etc. Guns and all accessories, even suppressors. |

I imagine if it comes time for a claim you will just have to file a police report and provide the information at that time. Not a bad setup, especially if you are constantly acquiring new toys or buying/selling. For the OP, it is definitely worth it to insure them separate from a home/renters policy. You generally can take advantage of a low deductible that way (often $0) and with a good policy you will have very broad coverage. The other advantage that if a claim is made, it won't jack around with your HO policy since they are separate. |

I've got mine through state farm. I'm required to list everything, but they're covered in the event of lost, stolen, broken, etc.
I've got class 3 also, so not too worried ab big brotha at this pt. They wouldn't cover ammo or mags though, bc they weren't serialized items. I pay ~$300 for 25k of coverage |

I use USAA and the extra rider. I have too many form 4's to care about big brother. They also insured my ammo What happens when the ammo is distroyed in a series of small explosions? I have always kept a reasonable amount on hand plus my reloading stuff. The insurance is for theft and fire. I give them pics to keep everyone honest. My wife just had a little girl and there hasn't been a lot of time for small explosions, except the diaper ones |

They have dealt with all my BS over the years. I have never had a claim, but if you look in forums for reviews, their claim service gets rave reviews. |

I have the exact policy you are talking about, through USAA. There is a block to provide any descriptive information (including serial #, if you wish) you want, but no one from USAA ever confirms it. My assumption is, they will want photographs, receipts, etc to prove you actually own/owned the firearms, in the event that there is an issue. I provided serial number, because fuck it. If there is a list, I'm already on it. And if someone comes for my guns I'll be leaving in a body bag. |

And remember the maximum amounts are NOT per item. The maximum is for the aggregate payout. (or at least it is in my policy) I have my high value firearms and most of my wife's jewelery itemized as a part of my homeowners insurance. If it is not itemized under my policy then the maximum amounts apply. |
