I really am clueless on the value of these, but a friend has one he wants to sell.  It is a 5 digit serial number and it is practically unfired.  What would a fair offer be?

He bought three of them back in the day and is the original owner.  I want to be fair and not low ball but have no idea where to start.  Gunbroker seems to be all over the place on them.

IM is OK or if you need to move this thread, I am OK with that mods.

This.

There is an appraisal thread in the retro section where you could get a really good idea but it's probably in the same ballpark as the above range.

My family has one. It's in my care right now. On average when I take it to the range. Offers are around 1200 to 1500. And I always get at least one offer. Oh and ours is low number. Made in the early 60's I think.

Five digit serial numbers aren't anymore collectable than six digits.  If the seller thinks they are, they're hoping for a sucker.

It's been my experience that unless it has the old style parts (Sub-3000 serial), it's not going to bring a real premium.

And, really, a two digit SP1 is collectable.  Maybe a minty 3 digit would get someone excited, but I doubt a 4 digit would even do it.

And, don't forget... The serial number on an SP1 will start with SP, not SP1.  So, if the serial number is SP12345, that's a 5 digit, not a 4 digit.

The problem with pricing them is that their non collector market just vanished with CT and NY going tits up. Those were the states that would pay top dollar since they escaped their respective earlier bans.

As far as the collector market, it's small, and very demanding about condition. Keep in mind that a 1/12 isn't that desirable in today's AR scene.

Looks like someone swapped out stocks.  But, that one is certainly better to use.

Last fall, here in Utah, I'd see them priced as low as $900, typically $1000-$1200.

Nowadays, I'm not sure.  Here's an ad from last month.

Others on hat website are prices in the $1700-2100 range

An SP1 is on my most desired AR list right now.  But I wouldn't go over $1100 myself.

Had one, and sold it for around 1k at a gun show years ago. Hated that stupid large pivot pin bullshit.

the SP1 is the typical 60 and early 70's girl, nice light and skinny, the typical girls nowadays are a bit larger and heavier, we add optics, flashlights, rail systems etc.

My M16A1 was real light compared to my AR, when I picked up a AR15 version of the M16A2 with the heavier barrel, It was noticably heavier. Those light weight rifle are nice at times

I like mine, it's a mid 70s model, I didn't really buy it for collectibility.  I take it out every once in a while and shoot it, it's pretty darn accurate with 55gr FMJ.

I agree with that.

They're cool as shit, easily worth $500 premium over going rate of current ARs.

Unless it's well loved of course, but $1200 is a pretty good price IMO.
