Why does everyone use AR500 steel plate for their steel targets ? Why not use a ballistic steel like A46100 Armor Steel Plate ?

Seriously?

Because AR500 is the "commercial" variant of the MIL-46100 steel, but is cheaper to produce because no certification is required.

Hang on, I'll find out what it runs me to get the A46100. I make my targets out of AR500 (and AR400 for the pistol targets) because that's what people ask for.

Still waiting for a reply from my little bro on availability and price.

My quick search indicates that the hardness is 475-525 on the milspec, but it has specific constituent requirements, which AR500 does not (trace element requirements)

And availability. My vendor replied "sure, how many truck loads do you want?" to my inquiry. Functionally, the stuff appears to be identical to commerical AR500. Appears to be the same sort of situation as mil-spec vs mil-surp. In many cases, the same product, but one has been sold to the military, and one hasn't.

/But, I have to buy it in truckloads, instead of piece work
