hey guys im looking for a chainsaw and was wondering what you guys are using?

Stihl.
Standard at the FD I work for. one on every engine. Standard for me too. I was laughing with my neighbor not long ago, I needed to cut a power pole for the kids treehouse build. I pulled mine out from under a shelf where it has been for God knows how long, 5 years maybe. He predicted a complete over haul. Started on the 5th pull. We laughed, " musta remembered the Stabil!" Love my Stihl. |

My dad had a Stihl that we could simply not kill. Cut enough wood to survive winters at the Grand Canyon for a decade. I also use an itty bitty echo at work, and its nice and light when I'm humping it all day long, and don't want to carry bulky heavy saws.
Also, listen to the guy who said go professional. If your gonna use it much, the better build quality is worth it. |

Stihl 039 & ms180c for little stuff. The 039 is a big, heavy wood ripping menace. I love it. The 290 is a great saw for most things. My friend is a long-time, old school tree man and he told me to get a 290. I happened upon the 039 for a great price and couldn't pass it up.

Quoted: Quoted: Stihl Farm Boss - MS290. 20" bar. Yes, Yes and YES!!! Except I've only the found the need for 18" bar. Anything that damn big is stay put!! My 039 can carry a bigger bar, but I just use an 18"-er. I've cut through lots of 28 to 34" diameter oak with a skip-tooth Husky chain, no problem. I can't really justify spending the dough on a 22 or 24" bar. |

This thread might help "Help me pick a chainsaw!"
Eventually I went with a Stihl Farmboss 290 with an 18" bar. I wanted a Husqvarna but they were just slightly out of my price range for the low-end pro series and the homeowner/farm/ranch series (e.g. the ones they sell at big box stores like Fleet Farm or Northern Tool and Equipment) received mediocre reviews. Ultimately my opinion (based on research and reading reviews) was that Stihl or Husqvarna both make excellent pro series saws, but Stihl makes slightly better mid-range (e.g. farm/ranch) chainsaws. Also, I did read many opinions that the Stihl Farmboss 290 can handle a 20" bar but does its best work with a 16" or 18" bar. With a 20" bar you will lose some power. For my needs on my eight acres I went with an 18" bar and it is perfect. |
