Is it a good idea to notify your landlord/apartment office if you are going out of town, or is it better to keep that information on the down low?

On one hand I'd like to be contacted if anything arises and they need to get inside, on the other hand I don't want to be announcing to people that I will be gone.

I wouldn't tell them. I would as a matter of record leave them a contact number, i.e. my cell number.

If your LL can keep his mouth shut, by all means tell him. OTOH if he's a blabbemouth, don't. easy peasy.

General OPSEC: The more people know of your plans, the the greater the likelihood of someone learning about them. Your LL may be a good guy, and his children may be, but if the kids trust the wrong person with the information and mention it to the wrong person, you're SOL.

Most burglaries are inside jobs to some extent or other. The neighbor says you're out of town... the LL kids as already mentioned... the mail delivery guy says you've had your mail turned off for a few days... any of these can add to your risk.

There are other "tells," too. Do you park your motor home where it can be seen from the street or do you keep it in storage? Lots of crooks cruise the neighborhoods on Thursday or Friday, then come back Saturday night and see whose motorhome is missing.... then  they know where to break in.

My lease says to notify if you will be gone for more than three days.

I have gone years without speaking to my landlord.

So no. I just tell family if I am going out of town.

When did this turn into an anti-Motor-Home rant fest?

I never have.  Friends and family yes, not landlord.  Never saw the reason.
