What the fuck is up with all the damn ticks this year? I've lived on this property since 1986 and usually never see a single one during the warm season. This year, every time I go out and walk the dog I have at least one of those sons o' bitches crawling on me when I get back. Now I feel like a damn tweaker with their meth bugs crawling on them. |

That is as awesome as it is disgusting. (how much if the tick weighs 250#? |
|
No kidding! had to take 3 off my JRT the other day and woke up with one crawling on my bicep yesterday!
I nearly shit, fuck I hate those disgusting things! Took JRT to get shaved in order to more easily remove any future invasions and the lady said the are very bad this year. |

Lots of ticks here in NE OH. Found a couple on my nephew so far this year. I've lived in NEO my whole life (over 50 years) and have never seen anything like it before. Hell, I was probably 40 years old before I ever picked the first tick off of me. I grew up in the country, was always out in the woods and weeds too.

| Out on our land we have ticks pretty bad about 2 out of every 3 years. Last year they were really bad in the drought. However, this year I have only came back with 2 or 3 probably. Last year at this time you could brush half a dozen off you before you get in the vehicle and still find 2 or 3 on you when you get home. Hate those bastards. |

Deet FTW! Deet does nothing for ticks. You have to spray your clothes with Permethrin and I'm not all that fond of being in constant contact with that stuff. Once in a while backpacking, sure. Not so sure about everyday. Weird. OFF with DEET claims to stop ticks... |

I never had to worry about them when working in my yard/land until about 4-5 years ago. Now I try to remember to use bug spray and go over myself carefully once I come back in. I've found several on me already this year - all but one of which were still crawling. That one I removed properly.
It used to be only a few ski areas where we did survey work that were notorious for them. Now I'm always on the lookout. |

Chickens eat ticks. Too many things that like to eat chickens here.
I raised pheasants and other game birds for a while. The back of my property looked like a mass grave site for raccoons and I never even put a dent in their population. Chicken tractor will save your chickens and get the ticks |

I use Frontline and Ticktwister for removal... Ticktwister really does work .

Not so sure about everyday. I don't believe that is true. http://www.outdoors.org/publications/outdoors/2012/equipped/tick-off-most-effective-tick-repellents.cfm Repel Ticks: Use DEET Of all the various insect repellents available, DEET has been shown to be the most effective at repelling ticks. “There is pretty good data that DEET works against ticks,” confirms Durland Fish, professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health. Other repellents, including those that contain picaridin, are simply not proven to fend off the blood-suckers. “We’re pretty confident that DEET works,” agrees Dr. Tom Mather, director of the Center for Vector-Borne Disease at the University of Rhode Island and its Tick Encounter Resource Center. “Those other repellents have just not been effectively tested against ticks.” |

My vet told me this year would be terrible for ticks, and she is correct. I didn't ask her why, but we have more than the usual amount of the little bastards. A good non-toxic (to people and 4 legged critters) tick and flea killer is borax soap. Sprinkle it about in the yard and reapply every so often. |
Spring and early summer is the time for ticks. Do you have a lot of deer? Tick populations often follow the deer herds. You obviously are not shooting enough deer.
I see them in various places here in Maine but never see them on my own land. Not sure why but I do keep it cut and tidy. |

| Check yourself at noon and before bed. Bare nekid-mirror. Sprays do little-don't bother IMO. Check over, under, in between. They crawl up to a restriction-belt, knees, collar, hair. Check the kids and wife as well. Last weekend picked 13 off a 14 pound dog. Keep the dags off the bed. Parastar the dogs, and spray their legs with a 3:1 water/ vinegar mix. I'd rather tolerate ticks than skeeters and horse/deer flies. We are lucky to know what they are...... |

At the time I was using it my pooch was in a fenced yard roughly 40' x 40'. I would use one box and just do the half of the yard next to the house and sprinkle some on the pooch. It is a good thing to use in areas where you have small kids and don't want to expose them to sprays etc. For 3 acres? Nuke it from orbit, it is the only GD approved method. |

Maybe diatomaceous earth would work, prolly cheaper. |
| We've been having quite a few every year since about 2001. Before that I saw very few going back to the late 70s when there seemed to be a fair amount. Last year our crew of four with dog would pick them off in the truck after work, often 30 or more, but they were almost never attached. |

Not so sure about everyday. You just need to get some permethrin--google it, and you will find Amazon has it for about $22.00. It's a concentrated quart that will make many gallons. Spray it on your clothes and boots, let it dry, and it will last most of the summer, even after washing. You will likely have ZERO ticks. |

it has been a bad year for ticks here in indiana.
i have read lots of theories; warmer winters over the past few years, huge acorn crop a few years ago that resulted in a boom in mice population and then ticks. i live out in the country and this is how i deal with them. there is not much you can do in early spring until the birds return. Robins feast on them. I try to keep my lawn mowed and cut very low. this makes it easier for the birds to find them. it seems to work as when i get more birds i get less ticks. usually by june the tick population has been reduced significantly as i find very few. april and may are the worst months there is also a granular pest control application for the yard and it seemed to help. its been a few years since i used it and i cant remember the name. |
