Go to a diamond broker, not a jewelry store. If possible, take the diamond for an independent appraisal prior to purchasing. The dirty little secret is that diamonds aren't a girl's best friend, they are the unscrupulous jeweler's best friend.

I went to a store recently in Dallas and it blew my mind all the shit they try and add in. They tried to get me to walk out with the ring but I told them I needed anal commitment first...

If I were a guy looking to buy one right now, I'd comb Craigslist or buy used elsewhere.
Diamonds don't have memories.  She doesn't have to know if someone else owned it once.  You can have it reset to suit you or her.

Markup is substantial and I just think paying that markup is stupid.

I used a family friend who was a broker to buy a diamond .

I will admit I paid $5400 for the diamond.....  but when having it appraised , the value was $10,000..   so mark up is stupid ridiculous

Diamonds are pretty stupid, IMO. If it makes you happy, fine, but wife and I agree they are pretty much just a waste of money...

Diamonds essentially have no resale value, the gold in the ring does.

You will pay big bucks for a diamond, think of it as a pussy tax.  Try to avoid it and you will endure far more hardship than the IRS could ever dish out, and there is no statute of limitations, either.

In Ga, just go to Shane Co.  They are honest and stand behind their product 100%.

Took the sammich maker's rings in recently to have them resized.  Bought thm more than 20 years ago and I fully expecte a bill of 100 bucks or so for the service.  They did have to keep them 24 hours, and then fed-exed them to me the next day.  No charge, that is their policy, it wasn't a favor or oversight.

Got a REAL NICE sammich the next day!  Thanks Shane Co.

Diamonds are typically truley worth less than the gold or platinum they are mounted in. Unless its a very clear high quality stone above a carat. You would not believe the markup in a diamond. Try a pawn shop, y

Is there any way to ensure that diamonds are west African conflict diamonds?  I think it would be cool to know someone had their head cut off in the procurement.  Then I could perhaps get some of those awesome pants and a USP.

Half the shit in your house is made by slave children in China but thank you for showing us how progressively enlightened you are. Stick to the coffee shop if you wanna impress somebody with your newly minted awareness.

I bought the main diamond from a scorned female, at a SUBSTANTIAL discount.

Just replaced the setting.

Wife loves it, has a much bigger rock/better quality than I could have bought from a store. Gets compliments all the time.

Edit: Came with GIA paperwork.

The best part of these threads are the people who don't blink an eye at spending a few grand a year on their firearms and parts for them, but all of a sudden become the cheapest fuckers in the world when it comes to purchasing a ring, a single time, for their woman.

The problem I have is diamonds are highly over valued by market manipulation. It wasn't until De Beers launched a massive PR and advertising campaign in the 40's that the diamond wedding ring became the fashion in the US. Then awhile back De Beers started the bullshit "rule" that you must spend X months salary on a ring. Now De Beers is trying the same thing in Japan, making it the new custom that wedding rings must have diamonds.
