I had a bad pain in my upper abdomen area last night ended up in the ER at 3 am. The did a cat scan and determined I had a inflamed Gallbladder. They gave me a IV with some pain meds.Felt good afterwards Dr told me to call a surgeon Monday and they might have to remove it, but they would do some more test when i go there. I been asking around and searching online, But if i have to have it removed what should I expect on recovery time and time away from work? I operate a Stamping press so I do do a lot of moving skids of metal, working on dies and moving finished products. |
| Depends. If the removal is laproscopic, the incisions (4) are minimal and the recovery should be the same. If the removal is "old style" the incision is 10" long and the recovery could be weeks, especially if your job requires physical exertion. If you go for the "old style" ask for the morphine pump. On the bright side, you can delete the word " constipation" from your vocabulary. |
| Most perform Laparoscopic procedure... a week to two before normal physical exertion (depending on your age, physical condition, etc). But you are asking the wrong question... The gall bladder is not a redundant piece of equipment you don't really need (as some docs will tell you). Talk to a as many folks as you can about life without it. Some adjust, some don't. Good luck. |

Just had mine out in February, it was laparoscopicly removed on a Friday, I was on my feet by the end of the day, had to sleep upright for about 3 or 4 nights. The following monday i was back in finance class. Was off the pain meds way before the prescription ran out. A week later I was feeling lots better. After about 3 weeks later is when I felt way better. The only long term side effect that I have experienceed and still do is the about of time I have to go to the bathroom. Pretty much after after every meal. Doctor says its a common side effect. Other than that I feel great. |

My wife had to have her's removed two weeks after she gave birth to our son. One night the pain which went around her entire mid section would not stop. We ended up in er and they did ultrasound. The found gall stones. Next morning we were at specialist and they viewed ultrasounds and said yep gotta come out. The very next morning at 10am she had the laparoscopic surgery and 4 hours later she was at home. She was back to herself within a week. Except that 4 other weeks she had to recover from giving birth....
You need to modify your diet a little and be more careful of what you eat or drink. Some have the quick shits after eating side effect, but its not a large percentage. |
| Had mine out last August. HORRID pain for about 3 days (I know, I'm stubborn!) Was in the ER Sunday morning, Went into surgery Sunday evening and gave birth to a Gall Bladder the size of a Golf ball. It was laprascopic, so no major incisions. Woke up that night and ate for the first time in 4 days, Grilled Chicken salad from McD's never tasted that good before. Got to stay an extra day in hospital due to a post operative infection. I got home Tuesday afternoon, and proceeded to sit on my ass till Friday, went to work, and paid a mega price for that. Spent the weekend zonked out on pain meds and I was almost as good as new Monday morning. Only limit after surgery was no more than 20# lifting for a month. |
