Hey CPU-gurus,

They have finally upgraded my cable to digital (still can't get DSL). The wonderful cable company will rent me a cable modem for the bargen price of $5 per month with a $21 installation charge. Yeah right.

So, I need some help buying a good cable modem at a good price.

Any suggestions? Links to buy online?

Thanks guys. Will I need a signal booster? Is it worth the extra $35?

Have the same modem and service from Comcast.  When it's up it really moves the bits.  About once a month though the memory in the modem that retains the initialization string and settings will hiccup and it'll quit working.

Find out from your cable company how to get them to force-feed it a re-initialization string.  Got conflicting info from Comcast on that: one guy sez just disconnect everything for 15 minutes (IIRC ?), hook it back up and that will tell them to send the new string.  Next guy sez you have to call to get them to do it.

Three times so far, two times had to call, once it did it on it's own after being shut down for a few hours.

Sure is faster than DSL though.
