I was shamming this morning at my horrible job and inevitably ended up on duffelblog where I got a chuckle out of their article on dueling.

http://www.duffelblog.com/2013/05/dod-dueling-corporals-swords/

It got me thinking. Why is dueling no longer a custom amongst gentlemen? It seems like a legitimate way to settle a grievance. You either get the satisfaction of wounding or killing the guy, or you see them shamed as a coward for not accepting your challenge. Or, you lose and maybe die.

Dueling. If both parties are willing, then why not?

I just wrote a report on this for class. I'm all for it but I'm afraid we'd thin out the dog park goers too fast.

The caption of the picture shows why. After a week of Duels over $80 and the local barracks tramp we'd have way less junior E's than we need.

I've always been a supporter of putting your money where your mouth is- or in this case, your dueling saber. Sign the waiver. Get some witnesses, and duke it out. Problem solved. Now we live in a world ruled by bean counters and desk jockeys.

Problem with dueling with a weapon that requires skill, physical ability and practice is that its easy to abuse the system.  If I know I can outduel youwhats to stop me from being disrespectful to your buxom wench?  The worst that could happen is that I end up killing you in a duel I know I can win.

Dueling with smoothbore pistols is another story, at a decent range its a crap shoot and relies less on skill and practice.  So against a random person you still have a decent chance of taking a lead ball in the gut and dying of a horrible infection.
