Should Russia go through with the deal to sell Syria the S-300 missile system how long would it take them to install and train the Syrians to operate it?

I'm guessing two to three years, sound about right?

I would think the Syrians would want to fast-track whatever systems they get, which hopefully they don't get any. I also don't think the Israelis would tolerate that very well either.

Israel certainly wouldn't like it, but there isn't much they could do beyond accounting for it in future mission profiles.

Israel has already trained against it in Greece

It wouldn't take that long to deploy the system.

Training would be OJT and Russians would operate the systems until the Syrian forces were capable.

The same way they trained North Vietnamese fighter pilots and SA-2 operators.

The Russian could man them.  They have done stuff like this before. (cough) Vietnam (cough).

According to Israeli press reports, the Syrians have already gone to Russia to train on the S-300.

It really depends how serious Putin is about it. It could be done in a matter of hours if he really wanted it to happen.

Same could be Said for what the Israelis could do to said systems in a matter of hours.

The Russians have more of their Navy in the Mediterranean than at any time since the cold war, they've even moved a bunch of their Pacific fleet to the area, I expect deliveries of the system are ongoing.

It's a waste of $ and resources when the opponent has no air.

They're long gaming it against direct intervention by KSA and Turkey and fact is,if it comes to that they're done.

Syria has long had Soviet-made SA-6 and SA-11 systems.  The S-300 / SA-10 system should be close enough that they can be operated by the Syrians fairly easily.  Maintenance on the S-300 might be a whole different ball of wax, but given Soviet design philosophy the existing Syrian techs could probably figure out what to do fairly quickly.

The SA-10 is a pretty deadly system am I right?  Wonder what kind of countermeasures the Israeli's are cooking up if any.

This.  They need to be buying more vehicles and night vision.

As I said,Israel took their 15s and 16s and even Apaches to Greece to train against theirs. The Israelis probably have a good idea how to handle them.

These are meant to dissuade the Turks and Gulf Arabs IMO.

Something that might end up happening is Russia effectively arming the Hezb as they become the Syrian army. This is a fight for their survival too and Nasrallah knows it.

I don't think Assad/Iran/Russia is worried about NATO.

Europe needs Russia's gas.

Russia has proven in the past that they're willing to use oil exports to Europe as a lever to move positions there, so yeah I doubt NATO is something they're worried about. Hell Syrian arty hit Turkey, they shot down a Turkish jet and no one seriously considered going to NATO and asking for invocation of the Someone Wants a Limp Clause.

Now having said that "NATO" could wind up involved directly except it won't be NATO itself but more like the US with possibly the French and the Brits. But I don't think that's very likely just yet no matter how much squawking McCain wants to do about no fly zones and interdiction missions.

Isreal won't allow the system to be operational.

Too close to the borders, Syria is too woven in with anti Israeli groups and too unstable.

Its not unthinkable for one of the systems to 'accidentally' fall in the hands of a radical Islamic group and shoot at Israeli commercial airliners.

Question is how gutted will the actual version they get be? I mean the Russians usually turn stuff into a paper tiger before exporting to the ME if I recall correctly.

Israel has already stated something to the effect of that "if God forbid they are  shipped into the country, we know what we have to do".

They know what they have to do.

I wouldn't be so sure.

Some of the analyses I've read say that the Israelis are perfectly content to see Syria remain just strong enough to resist imposition of a No-Fly Zone so Hezbollah can be ground down in a drawn out war.

But the war in Syria is slowly but surely grinding down Israel's greatest immediate adversary, Hezbollah.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the Mossad is propping up Assad.
