I still prefer to buy the physical media then rip to PC. |

download Audials 10 and install
go to youtube, type song you are looking for, play and record it as MP3. save to hard drive, import into your iTunes. open Pandora or any other audio stream website, it will record and tag songs as it records. does the same for video. will fill up your tiny hard drive rather quickly if left on for a few days, get a TB to start. you are welcome |

If the artist or band has their songs on youtube in decent quality you can download them from there. There are a variety of free programs that simplify the process, just make sure not to install any adware. |

If you have a PC, download the free version of Realplayer, and spend $50 for the good version. I have heard you can copy all you cd's and convert them to MP's in a snap. Anything on "the tube" you can download, even tagging several at once and putting them in que, and they will download while you check out Scandinavian goat porn, or whatever. Realplayer will let you save songs and videos in many different formats. When you record something from the tube", the paid version has a super quick download speed. I have heard of persons recording a 1 1/2 hour show in 22 minutes. It does take FOREVER to convert a flash video to DVD format.
Stay away from Limewire - it's a virus and malware heaven, so I've heard. Keep in mind that it is a violation of copyright laws to take music from outside sources without paying royalties to the artists. You can make archival copies of music you have purchased (linsert winking smiley here). |

If there is an uninfested program out there, I'd very much like to know what it is... |

Does your local library have CDs? Can you find the music you like there? If so, you can rip, and convert the music yourself. This way, you can encode the music the way you want to, and not have to deal with shitty compression, or multiple decodes and recodes.
As an aside, it is always interesting to see studio and recording technology advance, while the consumer becomes less and less concerned with quality, and more concerned with convenience, file size, and portability. It is funny to talk with engineers and hear them lament how they spent countless hours getting a mix or master just right, only to see people kill the high end and transients with bad compression, over-EQ it, and then pump it through a shitty pair of earbuds. I don't know if it is more a testament to the decline in active listening, or to the fact that music doesn't need to by ultra-produced to still be enjoyable. |
