I am looking at Wireless routers right now.  What is the best router under 100 bucks? This is for a home network and will mostly be used for streaming to a PS3 and iPhone for netflix. I am looking for speed and ease of setup.

Netgear wireless N with the Tomato firmware.

It has been flawless since day one.  Best router I have used.

I've used a Netgear Rangemax WPN824 for the last six years. An electrical surge killed the converter but a new one got it working again.

Looks like amazon has them for under forty bucks

Dunno what the difference is between regular firmware and tomato firmware is, but I love my Netgear router. I've had bad luck with DLink, USRobotics, and Linksys (twice). The cheapass Netgear Rangemax N 150 router I bought for around $40 several years ago when I got sick of my Linksys router always needing to be rebooted has worked perfectly. It's easy to configure as well.

This is good to know. My current Linksys is flaky and has to be reset all the time. I will look into the Netgear route.

They are all about the same for the vast majority of consumer uses.  I am fond of the Apple Airports.  Nifty little device.  Simple to setup, utterly reliable (at least in my case).

Linksys is shit gear. I have no idea why Cisco bought them instead of Netgear. Maybe they still hold a grudge against Bay Networks.

ETA: never mind looks like it will work.

My router's a 1 1/4 HP Bosch with a big honkin' cord on it. No clue how you'd make one wireless

I use Netgear and have had zero problems with it.

I have my laptop, Xbox, Blu Ray and 2 smartphones all set up to run through it, and sometimes have all of them going at once and it works like a champ.

Works just fine.  If you want to get overly technical and add some Arfcom style overkill, get a Cisco 1242 off of eBay and set that up for giggles.  I use one of those to cover my back yard.

I really like my netgear wndr3700 I bought a couple of years ago. It's been great for streaming movies from an external HDD, the usb port is nifty.

Anything ASUS

Install dd-wrt to turn it into a $300 router.

Dual band routers are ok, but the 5 ghz signal can't go through as many walls as the 2.4 ghz signal. So, I end up using the 2.4 ghz signal most of the time anyways.

Earlier tonight I picked up this much newer router and so far it is pretty slick and fast. It took a little while to get used to the new menu, but it is intuitive enough. I got it all setup and running in a matter of minutes with my port forwarding for my VOIP server and security for both Wi-Fi connections (it has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections):

It had fairly good reviews. If you want a good mid range router, it's hard to beat it. I got it at Fry's Electronics for $100.

I was able to save the $$$ & just turn on internet sharing over Wifi on my desktop (mac) computer.  Turns you PC wifi card into a wireless router.  .  Works all over the 1500 sq foot house w/ the ipad.   Also, less points of failure.

Currently using the Netgear N600.  Works great.  Multiple devices connected at any given time, and no problems.  My PS3 is pretty damn far away from the router, and on a different floor, and has never lost connection or anything.  Signal strength is awesome.

My last one was a Netgear, too, and it was also great.

Can you set up two Airports?, one to work as a wireless access point?

I'm getting tired of Linksys, and Charter Internet

I can't recommend a wireless router but I can offer a little bit of advice.  If you look into refurbished ones check to see what kind of warranty/support they offer.  I picked up a refurbished router/modem a few years ago (not sure of name because I was trying many at that time).  The unit I bought would not connect to the internet for some reason.  I called the 800 number for CS only to find out they will only answer questions via e-mail for their refurbished units.  I explained to the guy that I did not have e-mail access since their router/modem would not connect.  Luckily he was sympathetic to my problem and helped me anyway.

Ubiquiti UniFi access points. Enterprise level gear at consumer prices. Seamless roaming if your situation requires more than one to cover your house. This stuff is used in expansive warehouses, stadiums, retail stores, etc.

Is it even possible for a router to be your bottle neck, if you've got less than ~10 or so wire less connections at home?

I have one of those and a Cisco 3825 as my router/firewall. That's why I wasn't much help with an all in one solution.

Whatever's cheapest on sale.

Home wireless units are all disposable junk.  Run 'em 'til they need rebooting a dozen times a day, toss 'em and get a new one.

To date, I have ditched the Linksys, and purchased 1 Apple Airport Extreme and an Airport Express. The AP Express will work as a range extender. So far my internet surfing speed has had a measurable increase in speed.

Now to see what happens what Charter gets bogged down with traffic.

I like the Apple units.  I just don't like the pricetag on 'em.

As for what happens when Charter gets bogged down... Well, your airports will slow down too.  All they can do is pass whatever the router's giving 'em.

I ended up going with the  Netgear WNDR3700 man it is fast. I also upgraded my modem for the hell of it to a Motorola Surfboard SB6121 . It may be over kill but i no longer get lag. Thank you everyone for the suggestions.

I've had pretty good luck with my Linksys. The last generation (the ones that looked like shiny black spaceships) sucked, and I returned every one I ever tried. The newest ones seem to work very well, IMHO.

I wound up taking my Netgear router back because it started needing to be reset multiple times a night. I took it back to a different Fry's and they had 6-7 open box of the same model. It was good until it wasn't. Anyway on the recommendation from the manager of the component department, I got an ASUS RT-N56U Dual Band N600. He said it was the same one he had and he hasn't needed to reboot it since he got it when it was released. It had excellent reviews so I trusted him. I updated the firmware after I got it hooked up and so far it's been rock solid and perfect without the need for a single reboot. The ASUS firmware is their own version of DD-WRT if I understood it correctly.
