Today is the two year anniversary of the F-5 tornado that ravaged the southeast... The day that I lost everything except my family and only by an act of God. The aftermath of the tornado reminded me why you shouldn't rely/trust the government for help.... All the help we received came from my family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and complete strangers.... The only assistance I received from the government was in the form of three denial letters from FEMA. Well I'll take that back, I got 5 cases of MREs from the Alabama national guard.
I'm thinking about taking one of my FEMA denial letters to the range for some group therapy.... |

Yup, all we got was FEMA rejection letters too. Anyone with any kind insurance was rejected.
We were very lucky, only needed a new roof, and had to cut out and portage 6 trees. A local plumbing contractor company gave out free water, and sold generators at cost. Great guys. I've lived here(Huntsville) for 26 years, seen the aftermath of lots of tornados, 4 very close. NOTHING like that wave of them that day. |

My neighbors house disappeared, all that was left was her car. It was just sitting in the driveway with the trunk lid open. I found her in my back hard, under debris. The hardest decision that I have ever made was to leave my family, in our shattered house, and go looking for survivors.
Someone asked me if going through all of that was worth getting a new house, to which I said no. I would rather live in a trailer than to see that fear on my daughters face every time the weather radio goes off. Nothing is worth that. |
