o.k. long story short. i am an engaged 26 year old white male who has done nothing but law enforcement his whole life, i live in the SE Michigan area (detroit metro) i quit. i'm tired, i hate it, i want out. i am looking to get a job with real benefits, a CAREER. the bitch is, other than coppin' i have NO MARKETABLE skills. i want to get some kind of factory type job with the Big 3 automotive. i need some entry level stuff with a future. i can test VERY well if that is required. i want to raise a family, have a normal job, a normal stress level, and a normal life, and actually have some holidays off for once in my life. any suggestions? where do i start? seriously, thanks for the help guys. you guys/gals have been my support network through some recent VERY trying times. |

I felt the same way while I was in the service. Although I can't complain about where I am now, I think I made the wrong choice when I just got out and went right into the job market. What i would recommend is going back to school. I don't know how much you make now, but I know of several people who have actually been able to get enough from their student loans to live on while going to school. The only catch would be that it would take about 3-4 years to earn your degree. But you would be much more marketable once you finished and still have your police work as a professional background which really helps with job placement as well. Good luck! |

actually, my goal is to get into a skilled trade, and for that i would prefer to start at or near the bottom. i don't want to be management, i'm sick of telling people to do, and it would be nice to not have to hesitate to, "so, what do you do?". you think, will this guy hate me because of what i do, or lick my boots like some kinda cop groupie, more often hate me. i just want a semi normal life for once, hard work doesn't bother me, and i've always loved working with my hands. |

go back to school and get a degree. a skilled trade is good, but after awhile you will get to the top of the pay scale and that will be it. i'm a machinist i make good money, but i have to work 55 hours a week to support a family with 3 teenagers, next year i will have 2 in college, and that is expensive as hell.my oldest in college already has a job when she graduates in 2 yrs. its with one of the big 4 accounting firms.she will start off making more money than me when i work 40hrs.and her benefits are great. |

i appreciate the feedback, but you guys are missing what i'm saying. i already work 60-70 hours a week, i make around 13.00 and hour, and with cost of living where i am, that's dirt. EVERYONE is my boss, i work in a top heavy dept, where everyone is scrambling to justify their existence, my dept spends more in internal investigations per capita, 99% of which are to "keep us in line" than ANY dept in MI, per my union officials. i can't do ANYTHING right, i hate to turn on the TV for fear of what the "evil police" are doing. i can't advance unless somebody dies, i'm tired of getting shot at, and i don't want to be the boss. i also want to retire in less than 30 years, which is what i'm offered now, so i can enjoy my "golden years" i want to make stuff, work hard, go home at night, and have more than 1 weekend a month off. [:)] that CAN'T be too much to ask, i live in the auto/manufacturing capitol of the US, i will do it, i was just hoping someone could help. |

I was in the same boat. My undergrad is in CJ from WMU. All of my friends were in law enforcement. I opted out an got into automotive quality. Most of your cop skills are fully transferable. Money is really good and you will never be out of work. E-mail me if you are interested. |
