Currently doing 4 sets with 30 seconds to 45 seconds between sets. Each set increases weight by 10 Lbs. Working 5 stations. All upper body with 3 stations for lower body.

Do you find that doing less reps with more weight is more beneficial?

For strength training three working sets of 5 reps works pretty good for me. Depends on your goals and how your body responds.

Eta I rest a lot longer than 30-45 seconds between sets too.

What are you trying to do?  Get big or just put on some muscle?  Generally, the more weight you push the bigger you will get.  Of course, this only works if you're lifting correctly and targeting the right muscles.  If you're just heaving shit up you're going to get hurt.  If you're just getting started, I think 4 sets of 12x10x8x6 is pretty safe with a 1.5 min in between.  10lb increments doesn't really mean much as 10lbs biceps curl is a bit different than 10lbs squat.  You'll just have to experiment to figure out where your failure points are and where you start compensating too much with support muscles.  Just concentrate on proper form and you'll figure out what works best for you.

I am 60 and just trying to get back into some shape.

The strength I have gained over the last 4 months is great. Just looking for the next step.

The trainer seems more intent in getting their 30 bucks per session than getting me in shape

Usually when you are trying to gain strength you would go lower reps, more weight and longer rest between sets.
