I am having a pig slaughtered on Friday. Never done this before, but the pig kinda fell in my lap. I'm hoping that this will cut back on how much meat we buy from the store, but everyone will probably get sick of sausage and pork chops pretty soon. If it turns out well, we will raise a pig, ourselves, next winter and maybe buy a steer. I'm trying to ease my family into being self sufficient, I think this is a big step. Chili, smoked pork, bacon, carnitas.........endless choices. Hell, you could make 20 different kinds of sausages or bratwursts and not have ENOUGH pork. Raise 4 pigs. Buy a quality grinder. Sell excess sausage to friends/family, etc. Give it as gifts. Become a sausage king! |

Don't tell the rest of arfcom, but I don't think we are having Bacon made... Just chops, hams, ribs, link sausage and summer sausage. That is what my friend did. It came out to $1.12 a pound. I like scrapple, but that's because I have a yankee stepmom. Nobody else in Texas knows what it is, lol. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| You'll love it. Home grown pork is always better then store bought. And it can be done much cheaper then buying it from the store. Beef is another story. Not that you can't do it cheaper and make it taste better you just need to age beef more and feed it out for a number of months which can drive the cost up. |
