What say the hive?

Guidelines:

NO Detroit iron...period.  Ain't happening.

No Euroweenie cars.  I really like the MB E350 and the bigger Beemers but they are overpriced and way too expensive to keep up.  Gotta pay for those Germans' long vacations!

Any of the above will be ignored.
So...

Honda Accord Touring?

Lexus E-350?

Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Sedan w/tech package?

Or...?

Poll to follow soon.

<<This should draw fire>>

***************************

After driving all of the above and then some, I picked up a 2013 loaded Genesis 3.8 sedan yesterday.  I am MOST impressed.  The wily Koreans have really created a fine automobile.  I am amazed by the power, the ride and handling the quality of fit and finish and all of the gizmos that are going to take me a year to figure out!  The sound system is simply amazing.

Good deal at the Fairfax, VA dealership too.

Most important thing...SWMBO is most pleased.

Honda or Toyota. I've had fantastic luck with both.

Detroit iron? Every car from Detroit that I've owned or worked on for others has been a freaking pile.

My sister-in-law owns a Hyundai and I'm just not impressed with the tolerances. Shifting in that car is loose and feels sloppy. Although I can't fault it's longevity, it's a 1997 with over 200k on it but I attribute some of that to her husband (my BIL) who taught me literally everything I know about cars.

Not really.  I've already got my Ford truck and my wife will not part with her 06 Odyssey Touring van.  I'm currently in a '01 Infiniti I30.  Car is in great shape but I've got the itch.

You're making your judgement of Hyundai based on a 17 year old, 200K miles example?

That company, without question, deserves an award for "Most Improved Automobile Manufacturer".  Their new assembly facilities are supposed to be amazing.

My missus and I drove a new Genesis with the tech package.  It is a beautiful car and does everything exceptionally well, just like the other two.  It is bigger inside and out.  Powerful engine at 333hp on regular.  Awesome sound system and all the best safety goodies.  The other two are about the same in every respect but the Hyundai warranty is incredible.

My local mechanic took in a Hyunai Elantra with a destroyed transmission.  Someone had put motor oil in it.  He told the owner he'd have to take it to the local Hyundai dealer.  The dealer replaced the tranny at no cost to the owner and Hyundai knew that "someone" put the wrong lube into the trans.  That is customer care.

I just put aboot 2500 highway miles on a rental Genesis with 30k on the clock over the weekend. It was like driving a recliner at 90. Plenty of power and averaged 30 mpg at highway speed.
It developed a rather large "tick' towards the end that sounded costly.

Personally, I dig the Taurus.

Lexus.  Most refined of the 3 options.   While the honda accord is a good car, they tried to add everything possible to the latest generation to make it competitive with entry level luxury cars.  Not to mention the higher end accord trim level uses a touchscreen for input which totally fucks things up making adjustments more complex than the simple button based approach on lesser trim levels.

The genesis is a decent car but is a bit dated/long in the tooth.  Not as competitive as it used to be when it first came out.

I guess a bit of calibration is in order.

I'm in my late 60s.  I've owned just about every make of car ever made including a fresh-off-the-lot GT-350 that I bought with my combat pay and re-enlistment bonus, a VW Dasher wagon (For the missus and kids.), an NHRA C-gas coupe I used to race, a '94 Accord, a brand new '69 Dodge Charger 440 RT (More post-deployment $$$), a Chevy wagon, Cavalier, Vega and my wife surprised me with a 1988 Ford T-Bird, Turbo coupe. (That was a hot car.).  There are a couple of more but it doesn't matter.  Point is, I've driven a lot of different marques.

The best cars we've owned have been the Hondas.  That little '94 Accord would still be with us except that it was number 3 in a 5-car pileup on I95 in a downpour.  We stopped, but the folks behind did not.  We had bumps and bruises but five others were serious enough to be transported.  That little Honda crushed just like it was supposed to do.  It saved us.  It is tied for number 1 with our Honda Odyssey Touring.

I liked a lot of things about the other cars...but for the most part, they were junk and they took a lot of tinkering to keep running, which I did for all of them.  I don't do any car maintenance any more.  They are too complicated and my back is gone.

My Infiniti is nice...but fixes are very pricey.  My Ford truck is bullet proof.  I beat the hell out of it.

So...I'm looking for a nice ride for an old fat man.  See?

Would you believe I once got 22 bags of steer into the back of my wife's Dasher wagon?

Look in the mirror, Guy. Referring to the Genesis sedan as a shitbox is a good indicator as to how well informed you aren't.

um no.

merican brands are sub par, euro brands are stupidly expensive to maintain, Japanese brands are much more reliable than the later two and require infrequent repairs.

i'm at nearly 170k on my civic and other than the AC its still going strong. I've had fewer problems with this car than any other I've had. you couldn't give me a chevy or a german car.

The Genesis is nice, especially the 5.0 R spec.

But, is being redesigned soon. So, would pass.

New Lexus ES350 is a solid choice, along with the Toyota Avalon.

Infiniti Q50 is arriving in the Summer.

Accord V6 Touring is a good choice as well.
