What side does the grooves on pins face l/r? what are the purpose of these grooves?

no, spring extends down both sides.

It does not matter, but typically they are shown in TM drawings and such with the end groove on the right (ejection port) side. The center groove is for the j-pin in the hammer to catch on, and keeps the hammer pin from "walking". The groove on the end of the pin is for one leg of the hammer spring to catch on and keep the trigger pin from walking. Since there is a spring leg on both sides it doesn't matter which way the pin goes. Make sure you install the trigger/disconnector + pin first, then install the hammer (make sure the safety is in the "fire" position). Good luck! [8D]
