| 3 salesmen are traveling and decide to share a motel room to save money. The front desk clerk tells them it is $30 for one room (yes that's cheap, but lets say this is takes place in 1975). So they each hand the clerk $10 and go to their room for the night. Later, the manager shows up and asks the clerk if they've had any check ins. He says "yes, i rented room 201 to 3 men, and I charged them $30". The manager replies "That room is $25, go give them a $5 refund." He hands the clerk 5 one dollar bills and the clerk heads off to the room. On the way to the room he thinks to himself "How am I going to split $5 three ways? They are inevitably going to ask for change and I don't want to run back to the front." So he ends up giving each man a dollar back and just keeps the remaining $2. So each man has now paid $9 each for the room, for a total of $27. The question is, if they have spent $27 and the clerk kept $2 (for a total of $29), what happened to the remaining $1 from the original $30? |

Not a good riddle. $25 total cost, $5 back. 1, 2, 3, back equals $28. Clerk kept dollars $29 and $30. You may not think its a good riddle, but I've stumped many an accountant with that one. Its just easier to not get tripped up in the false math if you read it. Don't pat yourself on the back too hard. |

This riddle is only good when it's given properly by someone good at presenting things.
If it's said wrong or too slow in areas it doesn't sound right and people start figuring it out easily (as with text). If it's delivered properly, it stumps a lot of people. Text won't, too easy to take it apart. |

I did this thread a while ago, had a lot of guys frustrated.

Where did the extra $3 come from? |

Their is no dollar. They paid $25.00 for the room to the hotel. The hotel refunded them $5.00 They should have had $5.00 to split between the three of them, for a total refund of $1.6666667 each. Which means they paid $8.3333 each for the room. The clerk stole $2.00 from them. Which is $0.6666667 stolen from each person. $10.00 each - $1.00 each in refund =$9.00 - $2.00 the clerk stole divided by three is $0.6666667 stolen from each person. So you subtract $0.6666667 from $9.00. $9.00 - $0.6666667 = $8.3333 paid by each person. $30.00-$5.00=$25.00 $1.00 to each person is $3.00+$2.00 the clerk stole =$5.00 of refund. You have to subtract not add. |
