I'm looking to buy a CD burner for my PC (internal model) but with so many choices, I don't know which one to get. It doesn't have to be fancy, but I don't want a piece of crap either. I'll use it for copying CD's, backing up files, burning MP3s. Any advise ?

Check into the Plextor line.  They are made well and their price is reasonable.  They use burn-proof technology to prevent possible failures.  They've been #1 in their class for the last 5 years or more.  Here's one of their base models: www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10318528&loc=101

Get a Plextor - they are the best.  You don't have to get the fastest one out if you wanna save some $$$.
Also consider they have a relatively new one out that also can play DVD's.

LOL.....here try this link to help you decide...it is packed with reviews and will answer all your questions..

edited to add that I linked directly to the lite-on review...but just to make it easy to find the review page. All the other manufacturers are in the column just to the left.

I just ordered the Lite-On 40x12x48 LTR-40125S for my father-in-law's new computer.  I got it for $57 from NewEgg

I haven't actually tried that model yet, but I've been very happy with the Lite-On 32x12x40 model that I have on my wife's computer.

Plextor is the big name, but you will pay extra for them, and from the reviews I have read, the Lite-On drives are just as good.

I install CD burners in the high end medical computers that I build.
We only use Plextor and Yamaha.
To date we have had NO Plextors bomb out on us.

The Yamahas are a different story.

I will cast my vote for Plextor.  I have a 12x10x32 IDE which I will not replace 'til it burns up.  It has never, I repeat never, made a coaster.  Plextors are expensive, but they are worth every penny.
If cost is an issue, buy a LiteOn.  You can find them rebadged as Cendynes for ~40 or less or get the real deal from Newegg.  Newegg's customer service owns.

Also you may want to look at getting a software package to go with your burner...I have had a lot of problems with included cd-burning sw.
But Roxio rocks.......

I vote for plextor -- they are the best out there.  No experience with the LiteOns, but I've heard good things.

Whatever you do, stay away from HP burners.  They generally die within a few weeks.  (at least the half dozen I've seen did, anyway)

The TDK veloCD 48/24/48 is a good unit also.

Thanks everyone.

Do these burners come with software, or do I need to buy that separately ? I'd like something that would allow me to transfer MP3's to a CD. I've also heard that not all software will allow you to burn copies of protected CDs.

Stay away from the I/O Magic "Magicspin". I have the 40 x 12 x48 and I have thrown a load of CDRS out because of burn failure when trying to burn music. I tried all speed combo and found I can only copy music at 4x speed. What a dog!!

Data burns at top speed.

I've got both a Plextor and a Lite-On. Both are great drives. You wouldn't go wrong in choosing either though you will end up paying more for the Plextor.

Only other suggestion is to avoid Roxio's Easy CD Creator at all costs--it is junk. Nero Burning ROM is regarded as the best Windows based burning software since Roxio turned EZCD into a flaming pile of garbage.

Just read the other question about copying and software. The Lite-Ons and the rebadged Lite-Ons come with NERO. The Plextor used to come with a neutered version of EZCD (not sure if they still do). As for copy software, CloneCD is highly recommended. http://elby.ch/english/products/clone_cd/download.html

I use both Plextor & Yamaha.

Plextor was #1 - But they no longer mfg their own drives, that is out sourced to samsung if I recall. - They still do all the design work, and thier read only drives are tops.

BTW - I use a Roxio CDR software package that they don't sell here in the US - WinOnCD. - Try it and you will wonder how they ever got people to by EZ CD.

They recommend liteon 48x-12x-48x and you better do what they say.

I used the burner cds that came with mine, with adaptec  I have enough failed buffer over-run disc to make coasters for my whole family,as well as good targets!

But with Roxio 5 have not had any problems as such, know there  are better software out there but roxio works for me!

Roxio Easy CD Creator is not junk.  I use the Platinum version 6 and find it to be fast, stable, visually appealing and easy to use.

I've used Nero Burning ROM also.  While past version have worked well, the recent version constantly crashes on my system.

My vote is for Lite-on and the Nero burning ROM software. I have never had a problem with this combo.
