...I called in sick to work today.
So, since I'm at home with a sniffing, sneazing, coughing, achey, stuffy head, fever and bored out of my mind. The question is what's the longest you have gone without calling in sick to work? |

I don't count the days. If I'm sick, I'm sick. I hate it when people come to work sick as a dog. They get everybody else sick and fuck up production schedules. If you're sick, stay at home out of respect for your coworkers if nothing else. ^^^This but the problem is, those people that are paid hourly don't get paid so they'll suck it up. I can understand those people, salary people are what I can't understand. I tell the people I manage, when you're sick stay home and rest but then again I don't have people that abuse that understanding. A lot of managers don't care, they expect you in that seat unless you're in the hospital, my boss is somewhat like that but I would from home most of the time so I don't have to deal with it. So in short, depends on your boss and how he views this sort of thing, a good boss doesn't care but that takes good employees that don't abuse it either. |

This is a good point, but many, if not most, hourly jobs outside of the service industry, come with a yearly alottment of sick days. I agree that if you are sick, you should stay the fuck home. Don't be bringing your plague into the office to share. Seriously, what if you were coming down with ebola? Smart to come into the office? Hell no!! Stay home! Personally, being salaried, I stay home at the slightest indicator that I might be coming down with something. I'm in IT, so I can do nearly all of my work remotely from my couch, if needed. Probably translates into me taking a day every 3 or 4 months or so. |

That said, I've done 4 years straight before, my employer let me know and gave me a $20 GC. =] |

You guys are pathetic! Try 14 years with out missing a day of work. I can't stand lazy workers that "call in sick" every other month or more often. I always have to pick up their slack......you have a job so show the fuck up and work! I'd rather call in a minimum of 3 times a year for those 14 years and get paid over $30k to sit home and watch tv. |

At my company, we get 40hrs of paid personal time/yr.
20hrs at the start of the year, then incrementally each paycheck until July. Come December 31st of that year, if your paid personal time isn't used, you lose it and start back with the starting year balance of 20hrs. So... I use my time.
Unpaid time caps at 160hrs. Same with vacation. They both carry-over. |

I've had one employee that pushed the envelope on that, I eventually got rid of him but that was because of poor performance. |

Been a few years since I did. I don't think I've ever called in sick when I wasn't. Not saying it's "bad" to do so, just not how I roll. My boss is pretty flexible about such things though. Quite a few times I've gone into his office on Thursday afternoon and requested (and got) that Friday off. And since at the company I'm at we don't roll over vacation time I make dang sure I take every one I get before the end of the year. :)

I always have to pick up their slack......you have a job so show the fuck up and work! I think I get 6 sick days a year and can rollover 6 of said sick days. That is on top of my 4 weeks of vacation and 3 personal days. If my company was to look negatively upon taking sick days I am pretty sure they wouldn't let me keep 12 in the bank in a given year. Do I use them? No. I am a salaried employee who has the ability to work from home when I want to. However, I would much rather someone calls in sick than to come into the office. I don't want to hear you coughing, sneezing and having it sound like you are pushing swamp thing out of your nasal cavities when blowing your nose. But what do I know? |
| If you show up sick at my company you will be sent home. Standard policy is if you feel sick, stay home until you're better, then take an extra day before coming back in. No matter how valuable you are, you have to power to wipe out an entire department and then everybody is screwed. |
|
I've never been one to call in sick just for a mental health day. I average about 1 day every two years, but I probably should be out more. I once even vomited at work...luckily made it to the bathroom first. Ended up finishing the day. Usually I come in, decide it's not going to be good and leave early. When I had a 2-yr-old in daycare I was puking sick with some disease one a month for a while.
My boss must average 1 sick day a month. My current company doesn't have a formal sick leave policy for salaried employees. It seems that way people don't abuse it or feel sick days are free vacations. |

And that's one of the MANY reasons you should use that time. I'm not saying call in suddenly but most companies I've worked for will let you just use it as a paid day off. I'm all about giving work 110% but I'm also about enjoying the time I have while I'm young (er). Having nearly died at 27 and struggling with the results of that recovery for years has taught me that living life is much more valuable than any job. For the record, that doesn't mean parking my ass in front of the damn TV either Two, maybe two and a half years. Like a fool, when I got laid off I had over seven months of accrued sick leave that I lost.... |

A guy on my crew never stays home when he's sick and he is always the first motherfucker to catch the flu or whatever stomach bug is going around. But if we have several days of getting our ass kicked with heavy work loads he'll call another guy as he's driving in to get a heads up and then he'll call in. You nailed it , no respect for the rest of his crew. |

I usually pick up enough spare hours in a month that I seldom have to actually take PTO for a sick day. |

I've gotten sick twice this year because people won't fucking stay home. Then cough and sneeze and vomit everywhere, and give me their germs. Then I lose money because I am missing work, and falling behind on all the projects I'm managing. Not cool. |
| Yes, I was raised to show up for a job when I was scheduled to be there. I earn 6 sick days a year and those days that are not used can be rolled over. So the last I checked I have over 300 hours of available sick time that I can use. Shit, I could call in sick for 2 straight months! |

Sorry I was late responding. I was at work being productive unlike yourself sitting on your fat ass racking up 10's of thousands of posts on Internet forums.....LOL! P.S. I shit you not, one of my workers called in sick so we had to pick up their slack.......again! |

Two days off in September 1997 was my last, I was a week into a new job when I got a mean gastro bug, got so bad I had to get my father to haul me to a after hours clinic where they stuffed me full of electrolytes and a product called 'Diastop' - which, admittedly, did everything its name implies!
Was somewhat embarrasing as a young fellow who promises his new boss the world and turns into a liquid fertiliser spray in a week! |
