Growing up my father was a huge prog rock junkie. He used to copy his albums onto tape so he could listen to them in the car.

ELP, Yes, King Crimson, etc...and all sorts of obscure groups I can't even think of right now.

I don't listen to much prog rock as an adult (unless you put Pink Floyd in that category)...I guess I've had my fill.

Anyway, was prog rock a nerdy thing in the late 70's/80's?

Some of the newer prog metal bands are awesome, Porcupine Tree, Riverside etc. Love me some prog

Nerdy, maybe?  A minority of all the popular mainstream genres of that era certainly.

Was a HUGE Rush fan since the late 70s. Buddy of mine was always a bigger Yes fan. But we both loved prog rock and traded LOTS of tapes of various prog bands. Our love of prog rock gave way to prog metal. I spent most of the 80s in rock/metal bands playing Rush, Queensryche, etc. At least those were the COOL tunes we played when when weren't stuck playing Poison, Skid Row, etc.

Last prog band that I got seriously into is probably Angra. SUPER talented band from Brazil. Like Dream Theater (when they could actually write songs) with two awesome guitar players. Still love prog rock and metal, though I've been listening to, writing, and playing more acoustic guitar stuff these days like new age and flamenco styles.

I have a ton of Rush albums, but over the past 10 years, my POWB side has been growing, and I've been listening to a lot heavier stuff lately.  I'm a fan of UVTV (local show in upstate/central NY), and I catch it on the public access channel when I can.

Is Tool considered Prog? What about Muse?

They're AWESOME. Love 'em! Other favorites in that style include Lawson Rollins, Oscar Lopez, Strunz & Farah, Pavlo, etc.

My favorite flamenco-puro has always been Sabicas. He was the Segovia of flamenco IMO.

I can deal with Tool in this conversation (like 'em a lot). But not Muse (at least based on what I've heard and played in my last rock band).

This instrumental album is great!

I'm a huge progressive metal fan.  I think it's the normal evolution of a metalhead.  You look for more tasteful lyrics and greater musicianship as you age.
