Watching the Colorado hearings on their state's gun bans... and noticed that some of the Sheriffs have 1 star, some 2 stars, some 3 stars and some 4 stars.

I know my county sheriff in Texas has 4 stars, but our chief of police wears 3 stars.

Do the different stars mean anything?

Just depends on the jurisdiction and number of levels of command staff.

Our police chief wears 2 stars, assistant chiefs wear 1 star. Captains are the next level and wear captain's bars

I think that it's the Sheriff's ego, and what his state allows.

In OHIO, all Sheriff's wear one star.

In Cincinnati, all police chief's are full bird colonel's as in most Ohio city's.

But Cincinnati just got a new police chief and he decided that he wanted to be a four star general, and his assistants are two star generals.

There is no standard.

I personally take exception to police wearing rank insignia of US military services.

They should have their own distinct insignia, NOT military in origin.

Maybe coffee cups and donuts.

I know a chief who wears nothing because he says he doesn't want to look like a Mexican general, and makes fun of people who wear all that stuff.

The police chief I know wears a small gold pin that says "CHIEF"
