My last two deals on GB have gone belly-up on me. On the first one I sent the seller the money (plain envelope no tracking) and he strings me along for weeks saying he hasn't received it. I cancel the check issue a new one and inform him of my actions. Two days later the first check is returned to me by the seller, who claims it just suddenly showed up. I have now way to prove anything since I didn't send it with any tracking or signature required. The next deal I make, I send payment with a tracking number and signature required so I know what/when/where/etc. I inform the seller of this and now he is pissed at me because he has to sign for it.

I figured that putting a signature and number on things would protect both parties. I have been doing business online for years here on AR15.com and eBay and as much as hate to say it, PayPal does seem to have its advantages. But when sending a certified check or a USPS MO what are most of you doing?

What is the proper protocol for sending payment to someone?

Tracking and signature. If they do not like it tough shit. CYA.

Whether I'd pay for the signature and tracking depends on the value, and history of the seller. Generally it works just fine in a regular stamped envelope.

Their auction/ad, their rules.  Send payment exactly as they indicate in the listing.  If you're not willing to do that, don't buy.  I say that as a seller and buyer.  I will list things for sale along with the payment method(s) I accept.  Those are their only options.

When buying, if they don't accept a form of payment I am comfortable with, I won't bid/buy.  If he said he would accept the form of payment you sent as is now being a bitch about it, well that just sucks, so leave bad feedback.

Yes, I may miss out on a deal or two, but I'd rather not get scammed/hassled.

What were the sellers' feedback numbers?

Seems like I have problems every time I buy from someone with feedback of less than 100 transactions, or less than 98% positive.

This. He has a few days to pick it up at the post office and sign for it if he missed delivery. Cover your ass so he can't tell you he never got the money order.

Signatures piss me off but only because I work at night and its hard for me to stay awake all day to sign for something relatively minor. Its kind of like if I made you sign for things at 3 am. Caspian did this to me recently with a $150 slide and I hate them for it. If the amount was over $1k I will waive my usually no signature policy. Just my $.02.

I agree with bjkb1f "Their auction/ad, their rules." I read the listings thoroughly in order to make sure I can comply with the sellers requirements. And, yes I look at the sellers feedback beforehand.

I started this thread just to get some feedback on what most people are doing when they make payment. Drop it in an envelope and hope for the best or CYA with signature and tracking number.

I always try to contact the seller before sending payment to confirm address etc. and it is only polite to have good communication. Up until recently I have never had a problems, even when I was sending MO's from Iraq. Maybe I have just been too lucky all these years and have gotten spoiled. Maybe the current panic within the gun community has stressed some and brought out the worst in others. I really don't like to feel distrustful of people but, as I stated I was recently burned and feel that from now on I need to CYA in all transactions. I guess that from now on, if possible, I will contact the seller beforehand and see if they disapprove of signing for payment.

Trust me... Just send cash.  I'll pm you the address. What could go wrong?
