| Was talking with a friend about doing some coyote hunting tonight and was telling him I didn't much care for night hunting because my gen 2 NV is garbage...then he brings up that he just bought an IR illuminator. I've never heard of this before and did some googling. Seems like a pretty cool solution, but why can't we buy a good one that mounts to our guns like EOTech's ITPIAL AN/PEQ-2A? I just don't understand how people come up with these restrictions...you can buy the handheld versions, but not these...what gives? |

Um, we can.
I have an OTAL on one of mine. The rest have home-brew versions that cost about $150 each. As far as illuminators go, just add a Surefire Vampire. Until recently, they could be had on E-Bay for about $200 any day of the week. If you want a unit that does both, TNVC sells one (to regular citizens of these united States), but it is an outrageous $1500 or so bucks. ....Or were you referring to that specific model? |

That has an IR laser, the NEW sales of which are pretty much banned for civilians. Illuminators are available for all. Check out the night vision forum on this board and you'll learn everything you need to know.

Oh...well, what makes that specific model that I found so special that it can't be purchased by the average Joe? |

Their power is in excess of the FDA's limits. All is not lost, however, as the class I versions are plenty powerful.
Looks like good illuminators are still plenty available on the cheap: One E-Bay example |

Thanks for advice. |

Class 1 civilian legal IR lasers and illuminators. If you just need illumination, a white light with an IR filter will probably be ok.
