| So I have to write a paper for my psych class critiquing some sort of media, and I chose the movie Shutter Island. It's pretty clear to me that Leo's character is crazy the whole time. The question I have is what do you think his mental illness is? I'm sure most would say schizophrenia, and I think that too. I also think he has some sort of dissociative disorder and possibly a stress disorder caused by the trauma of war. What do you guys/girls think? |
| Multiple personality disorder? He develops the disorder because of his guilt over what his wife did to their children and what he did to his wife. In the end he realizes he cannot deal with the guilt, and instead continues to pretend he is the second personality so that they lobotomize him. |

Its whatever you want it to be because it is a fucking movie that was just attempting to portray a mentally ill person in an interesting way.
A case can be made for about any number of disorders you can think of. He displayed signs of a combination of disorders. |

First off, that was a movie and they played it fast and loose with any sort of actual psychiatric illness. Want a fun one? Figure out the illness in this video, ID the major facets demonstrated, and ID the surgical proceedure employed to mitigate the illness. In this video you will see actual symptomology displayed concurrent with DSM-IV and DSM-V. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDWgsQhbaqU |

The second, you are a participant watching the facade coerce around him. |
