"With the Old Breed" is one of my favorite WWII books. While most people want to read about life in the lines, there is a LOT of excellent stories I have heard over the years from guys who just fixed stuff or were stationed out in BFE and were simply trying to stay sane. I listened to a very funny guy one night talking about his tour on a weather station in the Aleutians. The gallows humor and pathos of it was hilarious but I knew it was simply how a 20 year old kid pulled shit just to keep from winding up with the Aleutian Stare. Much of WW2 was miserable hard work and month after month of sheer boredom and it was that way for most when you consider there were 8-10 people required to keep one guy on the line. |
