Does it hurt to leave your 30 rd mags loaded and sitting?  Not sure it is good for the spring.  Any help greatly appreciated.

I understood that it is the compression and decompression that is this what weakens springs.

Its fine. The mil is using mags that were loaded decades ago and seem to work fine.

Is it fine to leave them loaded AND leave them in your plate carrier though.    Do the little elastic bans that hold the mags in wear out?
2/8/2013 3:46:22 PM EDT
[#12]
I hope not, because all my loaded mags would be fucked.

It is the complete cycle that messes springs up... Not one cycle (compression or decompression).

I have 100 magazines that have been loaded for about 8 years.  Every once and a while, I take one to the range -no problems.

You should download a 30 rounder by 3 rounds, for a total of 27 rounds. Now, let' say you own 8 mags. You should keep 4 of them loaded (27 rounds) for 1 month, then cycle them. Unload them for 1 month, and load the 4 previously unloaded mags. This will allow the 4 previously loaded mag springs to rest for 1 month. After cycling as such for 4 months, it is okay to load one additional round for a total of 28 rounds per magazine, except if the magazine is a USGI and has a green follower in which case you should load only 26 rounds for 3 weeks and 4 days, at which point an additional round may be loaded for up to 9 weeks and 2 days. The exception would be if you are using steel cased ammunition; in that case 28 rounds should be used but that last round loaded should have a brass case.

Creepy Springs

One physical phenomenon with metals is that at stress below the yield strength of the material a very slow plastic deformation take place. In the spring branch this is called creep when a spring under constant load loose length and it is called relaxation when a spring under constant compression lose load.

I wouldn't lose any sleep about creep if you're using decent mags with decent springs.  But relaxation is a real property of springs that effects their performance, not just load/unload cycles.

I always keep 3 30 round magazines fully loaded; one in an AR and the other 2 in my nightstand drawer.

I'm not going to bullshit myself into believing I can prevail in a 91round exchange of gunfire while engaging  multiple assailants in my home in he middle of he night.

Old wives tale.

It doesn't matter what color the follower is.

Do your research.

Stop being such a defeatist!

What you really need to do (in addition to your current readiness) is stash loaded mags throughout the house, on every floor, in every room, in various locations.  May want to stash a few backup guns here and there, too, in case you need to do a NY reload.

If I can't deal with the problem with 90 rounds od 5.56 I'm going back to bed and worry about it in the morning.
